A Fashionable Indulgence
A Fashionable Indulgence: A Society of Gentlemen Novel | KJ Charles
11 posts | 14 read | 3 to read
In the first novel of an explosive new series from K. J. Charles, a young gentleman and his elegant mentor fight for love in a world of wealth, power, and manipulation. When he learns that he could be the heir to an unexpected fortune, Harry Vane rejects his past as a Radical fighting for government reform and sets about wooing his lovely cousin. But his heart is captured instead by the most beautiful, chic man hes ever met: the dandy tasked with instructing him in the manners and style of the ton. Harrys new station demands conformityand yet the one thing he desires is a taste of the wrong pair of lips. After witnessing firsthand the horrors of Waterloo, Julius Norreys sought refuge behind the luxurious facade of the upper crust. Now he concerns himself exclusively with the cut of his coat and the quality of his boots. And yet his protg is so unblemished by cynicism that he inspires the first flare of genuine desire Julius has felt in years. He cannot protect Harry from the worst excesses of society. But together they can withstand the high price of passion. Reread complete! I haven't made my card properly yet, but this will count toward #BookSpinBingo.

I do love these guys, how Harry brings out the best in Julius and brings him alive, and how Julius offers him acceptance and love. I'm not sure the way Harry's caught between two worlds was ever quite resolved, though.

I really loved this trilogy, so I'm excited this is the next book in my sort-of chronological-by-publication-order reread of all K.J. Charles' books!

(Sort of because there are books that came out in the same year, and I'm not being too particular about which order I read those in. Which lets me skip Jackdaw for a bit and get a palate cleanser in the form of the Society of Gentlemen.)

Aaah, this was a lot of fun. I finished it a couple of hours before my wife and it isn't fair, I need to talk about the end!

sheshedbooks Hi! What book of KJ Charles do you recommend for a first buy-and-read? 4y
shanaqui @greenreads Since my wife is most into SF/F usually, I started her with The Magpie Lord, so that's one option. My other thought was Any Old Diamonds, for the heist story, but probably my favourite still is her pastiche of Georgette Heyer, Band Sinister. I've enjoyed all of them a great deal, though! It somewhat depends on your tastes in romance and how much you can tolerate a bit of kink, which crops up in quite a few of them. 4y
shanaqui (That said, I'm asexual and still find plenty to enjoy about Charles' books, so I wouldn't say it's a deal-breaker.) 4y
sheshedbooks @shanaqui Ooh Kink is fine, 😂 got some fanfics to thank for that. It's the romance that is... tricky? Listed the first two for when I lift my book-buy ban! Thanks! 4y

The ending is a little neat but like all things K.J. Charles the journey there is great. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ #romantsy

My KJ Charles-a-thon is off to an excellent start! The swoonworthy fashions and the affection between Charles's heroes drew me in, while the political tension kept me enthralled. Young Harry finds himself pulled between the radical beliefs he's always wanted to repudiate and the upper class life he now enjoys, and it makes for some great reading. The ending is maybe a bit of an easy out, but everything that leads up to it is so good I can't mind.

I've finally started my long-delayed KJ Charles-a-thon, and OMG YOU GUYS THIS BOOK IS A DELIGHT! It's like My Fair Lady with a hefty emphasis on Regency menswear. Swoon.

kgriffith I have yet to read KJ Charles but have at least one title on my Kindle waiting for me! 6y
xicanti @kgriffith you're in for a treat. 6y

As any good Millennial knows, Selma Blair is 💯🔥🌶. Here she is walking the runway this weekend, wearing a very bookish bodysuit - made entirely of words! So, Littens, would you wear this fashionable ensemble? Or would you accuse anyone who‘d try to stick you in it of having “cruel intentions”? 😉🤦‍♀️

Kaye My question is how do they size them ? Archie comic book (small) , Tuesday‘s With Morrie (medium), Tom Sawyer (large), Moby Dick (XL) and Don Quixote (Jumbo). (edited) 6y
saresmoore I would absolutely wear this...if I was Selma Blair! @Kaye 😂 6y
SilversReviews I like it, but I wouldn‘t wear it. 6y

I bought this sweater because it makes my shoulders look like a meatball pizza. 🤷‍♀️🍕

... standing in front of my bookcase makes this a Litsy-appropriate post, right?

It's a bit refreshing to see a man obsess over his clothes, you generally only see women second guessing their outfits all night. #romantsy
