Fugitive Pieces
Fugitive Pieces | Anne Michaels

Anne Michaels spellbinding dbut novel has quickly become one of the most beloved and talked-about books of the decade. As a young boy during the Second World War, Jakob Beer is rescued from the mud in Poland by an unlikely saviour, the scientist Athos Roussos, and he is taken to Greece, then, at wars end, to Toronto. It is here that his loss gradually surfaces, as does the haunting question of his sisters fate. Later in life, as a translator and a poet, and now with the glorious Michaela, Jakob meets Ben, a young professor whose own legacies of the war kindle within him a fascination with the older man and his writing. Fugitive Pieces is a work of rare vision that is at once lyrical, sensual, profound. With its vivid evocation of landscape and character, its unique excavation of memory and time, it is a wholly unforgettable novel that draws us into the lives of its characters with compassion and recognition. From the Trade Paperback edition.

The most sobering prose, poetic throughout and so so sad and deeply feeling.
But so beautiful in describing the environment, the people and the world.

I keep starting this then putting it down.
Beautiful prose but devastating and harrowing in ts portraya of WW2 and the aftermath
It's upsetting to read against current situation in Israel.

A poetically written book in two parts, the first focusing on Jakob who survives a Nazi raid on his home and the second about Ben, the son of two Holocaust survivors. Both characters live with the effects of loss and grief and are haunted by the past, everything Jakob had torn away from him and everything that distances Ben from his parents. Lovely writing that made me want to highlight so many passages.

Did you vote for your favorite ever Women‘s Prize winner yet? You can do it here: https://www.womensprizeforfiction.co.uk/reading-room/2020-prize/help-us-choose-o...

Lots of good ones among these winners but in the end my vote went to an underdog: the tagged one. #womensprize #womensprizeforfiction

andrew61 Great choice, it's years since i read it but one i want to reread as i remember being overwhelmed. 5y
BarbaraBB @andrew61 I remember that too, so after all those years I thought it deserves some new recognition 😀 5y
Suet624 Thanks for the photo. I took a screenshot so I can find some of the ones I missed. Every time I see Shriver‘s book my heart skips a beat. So good. 5y

LeahBergen Oh, and Larry‘s Party! My book club replicated the dinner in it at our meeting. 😆 5y
BarbaraBB @Suet624 There are so many good ones that I am thinking of reading the ones I haven‘t! Kevin is a favorite of mine too 💔 5y
BarbaraBB @LeahBergen I too read it when it first came out. That must have been the early 90s if I remember well 👵🏼 😀. Larry‘s Party I remember little about. Was that the one about a gardener and a mace? 5y
LeahBergen @BarbaraBB I can‘t remember. 😂😂 5y
KarenUK Easy choice.... Shriver for sure...💕 4y

My mother's day present: a couple child-free hours to read at my favorite coffee shop. (Incidentally, @pocketmermaid sent me this book while I was in college almost 20 years ago. Progress on my massive TBR is slow but always enjoyable. ☺️📚)

#BookMail No2 is, yes I know, another Bloomsbury Modern Classics Edition, this time Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels, poet laureate Of Canada. Told in two parts, it‘s a story about the Holocaust & the scars it‘s left on not just the survivors but on the next generations as well. Moving between Poland, Greece & Canada, it was on the Canadian bestseller lists for over 2 years & translated into over 20 languages. 2 more novels & I have the whole set!

Cinfhen Gorgeous cover, I‘m sure it‘s a harrowing read but so important 7y
Teresereading Pretty sure I hav3 this on @ shelf somewhere, you‘ve inspired me to unearth it 7y

There's a moment when love makes you believe in death for the first time. You recognize the one whose loss, even contemplated, you'll carry forever, like a sleeping child. All grief, anyone's grief...is the weight of a sleeping child.
