The Cherry Harvest: A Novel | Lucy Sanna
7 posts | 9 read | 9 to read
A memorable coming-of-age story and love story, laced with suspense, which explores a hidden side of the home front during World War II, when German POWs were put to work in a Wisconsin farm community . . . with dark and unexpected consequences. The war has taken a toll on the Christiansen family. With food rationed and money scarce, Charlotte struggles to keep her family well fed. Her teenage daughter, Kate, raises rabbits to earn money for college and dreams of becoming a writer. Her husband, Thomas, struggles to keep the farm going while their son, and most of the other local men, are fighting in Europe. When their upcoming cherry harvest is threatened, strong-willed Charlotte helps persuade local authorities to allow German war prisoners from a nearby camp to pick the fruit. But when Thomas befriends one of the prisoners, a teacher named Karl, and invites him to tutor Kate, the implications of Charlottes decision become apparentespecially when she finds herself unexpectedly drawn to Karl. So busy are they with the prisoners that Charlotte and Thomas fail to see that Kate is becoming a young woman, with dreams and temptations of her ownincluding a secret romance with the son of a wealthy, war-profiteering senator. And when their beloved Ben returns home, bitter and injured, bearing an intense hatred of Germans, Charlottes secrets threaten to explode their world.

#MarchMunchies #CherryPie 🍒Cherry pie is a specialty of Charlotte, the MC of this WWII historical. I like unique perspectives in WWII novels & this one takes place in a Wisconsin farm community where German POWs were brought in to work the harvest. Some heavy themes & I didn't find Charlotte too likable, but an absorbing story & an interesting look at the war from the home front. I'm not a pie maker so I paired my review with fresh cherry sauce.

AnastasiaPoirier And now I need pie! 🍒 6y
TheWordJar I‘m not far from Door County, WI, well-known for their cherries around here. Sounds like an interesting book! And I could also use some pie now as well! 🥧 6y

By chapter three, I'm totally sucked into the WWII homefront dramas facing good people along the Great Lakes.

I loved this one; can't you tell? Complete fiction but based on true events during World War II when German POWs were sent to help harvest crops in Wisconsin. This story follows a farming family struggling with a son in the war, a daughter growing up, and some problems that arise when they push for the POWs to work in their cherry orchard. It's not perfect and there are a few cliches, but it is a gorgeous, honest, and original story.

Tav I thought the history was fascinating but the love story's resolution left me flummoxed. 8y
Zelma @Tav the ending went in a direction I didn't expect, but bonus points for not totally predictable! It was kind of odd, but I still liked it. 8y

Zelma @SharonGoforth @ReadingEnvy we're safe and dry so far. @Skiles no sandbags. They are giving out free ones in town, but we are flooded in. Yard and driveway receded a bit but all directions from our street are blocked. Mr.M was supposed to work tonight but couldn't get out. No one in the region can go anywhere right now. 8y
LeahBergen Oh no! ☹️ 8y

I have recently discovered my love for world war 2 fiction and this book did not disappoint. Set in my home state of Wisconsin and the cherry orchards of door county... This book vividly described how the war affected those still stateside. Love, family, secrets and what we do in the face of difficulties are prominent themes in the book!
