Duels & Deception
Duels & Deception | Cindy Anstey
One of Entertainment Weeklys 35 Most Anticipated YA Novels of 2017, this compelling and witty Regency romance is perfect for readers who like their historical fiction with a side of intrigue. Lydia Whitfield has her future entirely planned out. She will run the family estate until she marries the man of her late father's choosing, and then she will spend the rest of her days as a devoted wife. Confident in those arrangements, Lydia has tasked her young law clerk, Robert Newton, to begin drawing up the marriage contracts. Everything is going according to plan. Until the day Lydia is kidnappedand Robert along with her. Someone is after her fortune and won't hesitate to destroy her reputation to get it. With Robert's help, Lydia strives to keep her family's name unsullied and expose the one behind this devious plot. But as their investigation delves deeper and their affections for each other grow, Lydia starts to wonder whether her carefully planned future is in fact what she wants... Fans of historical romance will delight in Duels and Deception, a young adult novel from Cindy Anstey, author of Love, Lies and Spies. Praise for Duels & Deception: "A great introduction to historical romance novels for younger YA readers. . . . Ansteys novel is a wonderful coming-of-age journey filled with entertaining characters and wild adventures." School Library Journal "Jane Austen fans in need of a good new book, look no further. Cindy Ansteys new YA novel, Duels & Deception, is your next regency romance treat." Entertainment Weekly Praise for Love, Lies and Spies: "Its Jane Austen meets Jane Foster in Ansteys debut novel, which serves up a delightful combination of Regency romance, scientific curiosity, and spy intrigue for a tale that will have readers rooting for love and science." Entertainment Weekly "A great recommendation for teens who are not quite ready to tackle the complex language of Austens classics. . . . A cute premise and cover make this a solid purchase for budding historical romance readers." School Library Journal "Love, Lies and Spies is an adorable little romp in Regency-era London, perfectly-paced and delightfully entertaining. It had me grinning from ear to ear, cover to cover. And the best part of all is that it seems to be a stand-alone with none of those ridiculous miscommunications. It really was just a pleasure to read!" The Starry-Eyed Revue "Fantastic romance that I fell completely in love with. The amazing characters and intriguing mystery will make this a big hit with all YA regency fans!" Dark Faerie Tales "I never want it to end. I cannot tell you how much I love this book. Juliana, Spencer, Bobbington, ALL of them are just so utterly wonderful. This is BETTER than Georgette Heyer. YEP, I SAID IT. It even reminds me of my absolute favoritethe regency romances by Jude Morgan. . . . Just wonderful!" Kelly Zekas, co-author of These Vicious Masks

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was another quick read, and I also found that I liked this one a tad more than its sibling “Love, Lies, and Spies”. Some of the perspective was repetitive and the described premise for the book occurred pretty quickly and then was over, which was mildly disappointing. However, other plot points kept the book interesting and things tied up nicely at the end.

Having a difficult time staying interested. I may need to #DNF and move on if I‘m not finished by tomorrow night. Too many other books to get to.

Mehso-so

The second of Cindy Anstey's books set in the Regency period, these books are supposed to be similar in style to Austen, or at least that's how they're marketed. This one was just okay. I can see shades of Sense & Sensibility in there but these books are definitely not retellings. They are nice and light though and so would be good palette cleansers or beach reads. I did enjoy Love, Lies, and Spies better but I'll go on to read the next book.

I just got the Swoon Reads app. Basically you can read and review unpublished manuscripts from new, upcoming YA and New Adult authors. The best ones are then published! Duels and Deception is one of these. Right now I'm reading Unfinished: A Victorian Romance by Samantha Hastings and it seems to be just my style! (´ヮ`) #swoonreads #ebook #ya

I just received this amazing box from Swoon Reads. It was perfectly timed, full of goodies, and completely unexpected. I had completely forgotten about the contest at the end of NaNoWriMo. #bookmail

This whole state of affairs was nothing short of a disaster. Frowning, Lydia plopped—very unladylike—onto the firm morning room settee.
Disaster. Her father would not appreciate the word‘s use—too much emotion, smacked of an indecent amount of sensibility.

Okay, that was super fun! Almost as good as Lives, Lies and Spies, which I gave 5 stars to! If you live Regency romance, read Anstey! Plus she writes them with a side of intrigue as well.

ARC from NetGalley.

Thanks to #netgalley for this ARC! In this historical YA novel, Lydia Whitfield will soon turn 18. Her father already arranged a marriage with the guy next door, though Lydia can't stop thinking about her lawyer's clerk, Robert Newton. The writing is a little cutesy, but done in a tongue in cheek way. However, I kept wanting to read more...I got a little sucked into the developing romance. Very light read, if you are looking for some distraction.
