Common Sense | Thomas Paine

Vladimir & I are ready! I suspect I‘ll read parts throughout the day & let them simmer. I think it‘s remarkable that nearly 250 years after its publication Paine‘s words still resonate. For me, I‘m hoping this read helps me reflect on history & the current political dynamic.

Paine, a man with no prospects, helped ignite the colonies with this work. Anyone can be a hero.

What do you hope to learn/gain from today‘s reading?

Butterfinger I don't think I have ever read it - only parts in social studies, and that's a maybe. I want to see the parallelism of the two eras - creation of modern democracy and today. I am ashamed that I haven't already read it. I minored in history, for heaven's sake. . 2w
Librarybelle @TheBookHippie @kspenmoll @Butterfinger I read this for my AP Government class 25 years ago when we dove into pre-Revolution writings and the new nation‘s Federalist and Anti-Federalist writings. I don‘t think I‘m quite ready to dive into those writings quite yet! 😂 2w

I really struggled with this one (and so did my IRL book club). The characters, especially Sarah‘s twin sister Emily, are unlikeable. Cozy mysteries are not typically known for strong plot lines, but this one seemed even more scattered than most. I liked RahRah the cat! I don‘t plan to continue with the series. #Vladimir #CatsOfLitsy #LitsyAToZ #LetterO #HasShortChapters #52BookClub25

Teenage Writings | Jane Austen
post image

I had my after dinner chores completed earlier than usual, so I was able to participate in the #hyggehourreadathon tonight. With my weighted blanket and Vladimir, I read a bit more of Jane Austen‘s teenage writings (the Jane Austen House is hosting a virtual discussion of this on Tuesday). So interesting to see her writing evolve!

Current candle burning is Yankee Candle‘s Sicilian Lemon. My mood is relaxed at the moment.

Librarybelle So true, @Ruthiella ! 😹 5mo
Caryl I just started reading this -- isn't it fabulous? Thank you for sharing about the Jane Austen House's virtual book club! I can't attend this one, but might sign up for another later in the year. (Have you done these before? Do they send you a recording to watch later if you sign up?) 5mo
Caryl I also listened to this podcast about Austen's Teenage Writings. One of the editors was a guest for the episode. https://www.thethingaboutausten.com/episodes/ep93-the-thing-about-austens-teenag... 5mo
Librarybelle @Caryl Yes…these are so fun! This is my first time participating, so I‘m not sure how they have it organized. They do have the next few months available to sign up for—March is Lady Susan, then P&P, and then S&S, I think. And thanks for the podcast info! 5mo
Caryl Have fun on Tuesday, @Librarybelle! I'm excited for you. 💖 And hmm... I think it's time for me to re-read Lady Susan, and re-watch the film version (which was titled, for some strange reason, Love & Friendship). It's a great film, and a fun story! (edited) 5mo
Librarybelle Thanks, @Caryl ! I‘m looking forward to rereading Lady Susan! ❤️ 5mo

I really enjoyed this first in the Shardlake series. I‘m fascinated by the Tudor era, and Sansom captures so much about the corruption from both sides during the dissolution of the Catholic monasteries in Henry VIII‘d reign. I liked Shardlake, whose hard attitude helps his methodical mind process information. A great mystery too! #ShardlakeBR #CatsOfLitsy #Vladimir #Zeke

I needed a super-fast read and a palate cleanser…Charlie and Diesel were the perfect choice!

A nasty, cruel boss, terrible department heads, and murders keep Charlie and Diesel pretty busy at the library. Sad to say a few characteristics of the murder victim are characteristics I witnessed in my library career. Yikes! Great character progression, and another good series entry!

Most of my sidekicks hovered in the background as I finished it.

I just spent a month at Manderley…

This is a reread for me, and while I did not remember every twist and turn, I do remember the creepy vibes from this. It‘s a level of creepiness that slowly enfolds the reader and can make one shiver. That Mrs. Danvers…oh my! I loved it and am glad it was a #PemberLittens #HashtagBrigade read! #192025 #1938 #52BookClub24 #AnAbruptEnding

BarkingMadRead It was really creepy, esp Danvers! I don‘t remember that really bad scene from the first time! You‘d think it would stick, but it didn‘t 🤣 1y
TheAromaofBooks Same!! It was a reread for me as well, but I was surprised at some of the scenes/details I'd forgotten. 1y
Librarybelle @BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks I know! Maybe it was Manderley‘s spell…we just could not remember all of the bad. 😂 1y

For this week‘s #hyggehour , I read North Woods. Purely a #blameitonlitsy book. I‘m loving it. So unique & original.

#Vladimir joined me this week in my reading nook & chair, with my Candied Apple Yankee Candle scenting the air. #CatsOfLitsy

It felt good to turn off life for a bit…my mental health has not been strong this past week. This was a good reset moment, & I plan to listen to a session on the Calm app later tonight.

Admittedly, this took me several chapters to follow the writing style - I‘m way better at 18th & 19th century classics, not early 20th century! But, once I did, I found this an intriguing study on the class system in Edwardian England. Many of the characters are horrid, & I was not really a fan of Lucy, though she received the brunt of all of the clashes. I‘m glad I read this! #PemberLittens #HashtagBrigade

Thanks for hosting, @BarkingMadRead !
