The Nutmeg Tree: A Novel | Margery Sharp

Set in 1930s France, Margery Sharps witty, warm-hearted novel tells the story of a free-spirited mother who is reunited with her very proper daughter after sixteen years, when her daughter asks her to inspect her fianc Julia Packett has barely laid eyes on her daughter, Susan, since leaving her with her proper, well-heeled in-laws after her husband was killed in World War I. Now thirty-seven, her lack of prospects hasnt dimmed her spirit or appetite for life. So when Susan asks her to come to France for the summer to persuade her grandmother to allow her to marry her fianc, Julia sets sail with the noblest intentions of being a paragon of motherhood. But at her mother-in-laws vacation villa in Haute Savoie, Julia sees that her priggish but lovely daughter is completely mismatched with a man who is just like herself: a charming, clever playboy. The arrival of Susans legal guardian, the distinguished Sir William Waring, further complicates the situation. Soon Julias efforts to pass herself off as a lady and secure her daughters happiness spin out of control, leading to romantic entanglements and madcap adventures that challenge preconceived notions about the ultimate compatibility of any two people who fall in love.

Would you enjoy a light comedic British novel about a middle-aged woman who loves a good drink, a good time, satisfying sex, and small luxuries, but rarely manages to have more than one of those at a time? Then you will love this novel. All of Margery Sharp‘s ebooks are $3 right now. I own all of them and I read them over and over. You should too.

jillrhudy Sounds right up my alley! 6y

Margery Sharp's writing will always take readers on a wild ride. The Nutmeg Tree was fun, wild, eccentric, and hilarious. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it really cheered me up after reading such a downer book. If you're a fan of P.G. Wodehouse, be sure to check out Margery Sharp's books.

Margery Sharp is always a good author to go to after reading something depressing.

A delightful romp! This was a very fun, very British read. Imagine if Agatha Christie wrote romantic comedies instead of mysteries. Most fun is the main character Julia, a 40-something 'rum sort,' a good-time girl who spends the novel trying to be a good sort, a proper lady. Scrapes and screw-ups and romance ensue. I definitely plan to read more of Sharp's novels!
The title comes from the nursery rhyme "I had a little nut tree."

AlaMich It's nice to hear that there's a main character who is *ahem* a little more seasoned, shall we say? 😉 7y
merelybookish @AlaMich Agreed! And she's pretty unconventional! 7y

Finished two complex 2017 reads yesterday (The Ministry of Utmost Happiness and Sing, Unburied, Sing.)
So mood sent me to this little lighthearted book from 1937 that I bought for the Kindle a while ago. And there's no arguing with a reading mood. 🙂

batsy This sounds delightful. 7y

A delightful, light-hearted, entertaining novel from 1937 that manages to celebrate its sexually adventurous female protagonist in the midst of a romantic comedy. Fun!

The dictionary tells me that the noun "soak" is slang for a heavy drinker in British slang.

'Garn!' is new to me: according to Merriam-Webster, it's "used interjectionally to express disbelief or ridicule" in British English.

Verity I *think* - though I may be wrong - it come from go on. Or at least that's what I've always assumed as go on is often used in the same way in British English and depending on accent garn would be a fairly accurate written representation of how that sounds. Now I've said that, it'll be derived from middle English won't it?! 8y
shawnmooney @Verity That makes perfect sense! 8y

This is the first time I've seen the archaic "must needs" (which basically means 'must necessarily') in modern prose.

BkClubCare Life After Life by Kate Atkinson used it (and I had to look it up.) "We needs must love the highest when we see it.” — Alfred Tennyson 8y

This was a fun read! I really warmed to Julia, the protagonist. Plus that first chapter was one of my favourites ever.

Austen's keen observations of social hierarchies, Wodehouse's wit and maybe a soupçon of Shirley Jacksons bite. This is "light reading" for readers who still want their brains engaged (as well as their hearts) and I found myself smiling to myself and highlighting deadpan zingers for future use.

shawnmooney I got the free ebook and hope to read it next month 8y

About a third of the way in, and I'm loving it. Sharp is really funny and socially observant and...pretty naughty. It's rare to find something this incredibly smart and literate while being, really, a frolic.
