Cluny Brown: A Novel | Margery Sharp
19 posts | 12 read | 19 to read
An unconventional parlor maid upends the lives of an aristocratic family in New York Timesbestselling author Margery Sharps delightful comedy of manners set in England before the onset of World War II Cluny Brown has committed an unforgivable sin: She refuses to know her place. Last week, she took herself to tea at the Ritz. Then she spent almost an entire day in bed eating oranges. To teach her discipline, her uncle, a plumber who has raised the orphaned Cluny since she was a baby, sends her into service to be a parlor maid at one of Englands stately manor houses. At Friars Carmel in Devonshire, Cluny meets her employers: Sir Henry, the quintessential country squire, and Lady Carmel, who oversees the management of her home with unruffled calm. Their son, Andrew, newly returned from abroad with a Polish migr writer friend, is certain that the world is once again on the brink of war. Then theres Andrews beautiful fiance and the priggish pharmacist. While everyone around her struggles to keep pace with a rapidly changing world, Cluny continues to be Cluny, transforming the lives of those around her with her infectious zest for life.

I found my very old copy of Cluny Brown. A very longtime favourite - in not too bad shape considering it was printed in 1946

The story of Cluny Brown , a young woman who is dying to experience life. She is sent into service in the countryside.. and so the tale unfolds. The turn of events is heartwarming and surprising. Thanks Leah , I stayed up a bit late last night to see how it all turned out. 👍❤️ I loved it ! Great characters and Margery Sharp wrote with such great insight into human nature.

You often hear this … ‘married twenty-six years and never a hard word‘

‘Never a cross word between them ‘ … 🤔 I‘m always a little sceptical of this kind of talk. Come on !! Or maybe I‘m more of a crank 😂

TrishB That‘s my thoughts! One of my sisters always says we never argue (her and her hubby!) and it really gets me 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ (edited) 3y
Cathythoughts @TrishB I know , my mother used to say that about some couples … never a cross word !! I just don‘t believe it 🤷‍♀️ 3y
Susanita My dad‘s second wife told me they “never” argued, but they got divorced anyway. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y

I've been a bit out of sorts and only reading a few pages a day so this book has taken me ages to finish. But that is no reflection on how much I enjoyed the story. Perennial fish-out-of-water Cluny is a beguiling character and the story is delightfully romantic as well as comic. Many thanks @LeahBergen for such a lovely gift.

Cluny Brown “doesn‘t know her place”. When she is presumptuous enough to take herself to tea at the Ritz, her uncle thinks “enough is enough” and sends her to be parlour maid at a country estate in Devon.

Cluny‘s unbending enthusiasm and joie de vivre works its magic on every member of the aristocratic family she serves (and several of their guests, as well)! Highly recommended.

Thanks for the tag, @mklong ! #LitFortuneCookie

What do you do, if you don't want to stick in your business? You do everything so you don't stick in your business.. Cluny is a nice girl, but she doesn't know, where she belongs. She visits the Ritz alone, she visits men alone... After the final fauxpas her uncle sends her away, so she has to work... Does this help? Well 😂😂😂😂

Listened to this fun audiobook today. I have loved Cluny Brown since I read it for the first time as a young teen. Cluny Brown doesn‘t know her place her Uncle the plumber is scandalized that she went to The Ritz for tea. The only thing to be done is to send Cluny into good service in Devonshire. Old fashioned but still Sharp and funny. I enjoyed listening to this one.

Finished a reread of a favourite #romantsy from my childhood. Set in 1938 , Cluny Brown is being held firmly in her “place” by her Uncle Arn , stalwart working man. When Cluny makes the mistake of taking tea at the Ritz and unplugging a bachelor ‘s sink, she is sent to Devon to become a tall parlour maid. Cluny still doesn‘t know her “place”. Downton Abbey meets PG Wodehouse sort of 👍🐉😀 . Went to see Antman. So fun!

Mehso-so

Although I thought Margery Sharp's writing was lovely, I was not entirely sold on the story. I think what threw me off was the title. Cluny Brown is a main character, but she's not in every chapter. It's a quirky and, often, funny book, but it was just o.k.
