Strangers in Budapest
Strangers in Budapest: A Novel | Jessica Keener
9 posts | 6 read | 14 to read
From the first pages of Strangers in Budapest, the words You must not tell anyone made me feel as if a hand had reached out from the shadows to pull me under, and I was swept away inexorably by this hypnotic plot, these dark scenes, relentless tension. This is a riveting, beautiful book. Lydia Netzer, author of Shine Shine Shine Budapest is a city of secrets, a place where everything is opaque and nothing is as it seems. It is to this enigmatic city that a young American couple, Annie and Will, move with their infant son shortly after the fall of the Communist regime. For Annie, it is an effort to escape the ghosts from her past; for Will, it is a chance to try his wings as an entrepreneur in Hungarys newly developing economy. But only a few months after moving there, they receive a secretive request from friends in the US to check up on an old man who also has recently come to Budapest. When they realize that his sole purpose for coming there is to exact revenge on a man whom he is convinced seduced and then murdered his daughter, Will insists they have nothing to do with him. Annie, however, unable to resist anyone she feels may need her help, soon finds herself enmeshed in the old mans plan, caught up in a scheme that will end with death.

Okay, came up with all my prompts. I had all the books already in mind, so I came up with prompts to fit those books. I already had a list of 50 owned books I wanted to read this year.

I pulled 3 cards to start with for January
7♣️- Set before 17th Century - To Hold the Crown
10♠️ - Reread - City of Brass
4♣️ - Set in Hungary - Strangers in Budapest

#TBRDeckofCards

Clwojick You‘ve got some great prompts! ❤️🖤 3y

#ReadingEurope2020 #Hungary @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

The summary made this book sound much more interesting than it ended up being. Two Americans meet in Budapest, and the meeting sets a lot into motion. One is looking for a murderer, and one is simply wanting a change in life.

The story was slow, and even when the climax is reached, it's a bit lackluster.

BarbaraBB Kudos for finishing it, because it does sound boring 😉 4y
Librarybelle I have a copy of this one, because I thought it sounded so interesting! Sorry it was a bit lackluster! 4y

If I look at my familial #Homeland , I‘ve got ties to just about every Eastern European country, not to mention quite a lot of other Western European countries. Admittedly, I picked up this book for its description of suspense, as well as for the city name in its title, based in one of the many countries I can call “home.” It sounds interesting, with ties to history. #SoaringScores

Cinfhen I still haven‘t been to Hungary 🇭🇺 but it‘s high up on my list 5y
BarbaraBB Such a beautiful city 💜 5y
BarbaraBB Hmmm, maybe it is time for a #ReadingEurope2020...? The idea just pops up! 5y

Librarybelle @CrowCAH I wish I‘ve lived, or even visited, some of these places! I didn‘t explain well - my ancestors are from various Eastern and Western European countries. I enjoy armchair traveling to these places, either through fiction or nonfiction books. 😁 5y
CrowCAH @Librarybelle armchair traveling is very convenient! 5y

#WanderingJune Day 4: I was in a #CastleOnTheHill in Budapest back in 2013 with my linguist travel buddy. We spent a week here and another week in Bratislava. I am horrified to learn about what happened to the Korean tourists in Budapest fairly recently. Such a tragedy.

BarbaraBB That castle is gorgeous indeed and yes, what a nightmare for those Korean tourists 😱😞 5y
gradcat These are beautiful pictures, and yes, another tragedy in the world. Really horrible. 5y

Mehso-so

This was just so-so for me. I did like the descriptions of Budapest and Hungary, but I thought the story a bit dull and slow moving. May have just been the wrong time to read this one as I‘ve recently read some page turners.

starlight97 I'm gonna read this just because I live in Budapest 😊 6y
RebelReader @starlight97 I would be interested in your thoughts afterwards 6y
