Midnight Blue-Light Special
Midnight Blue-Light Special: An Incryptid Novel | Seanan McGuire
12 posts | 21 read | 3 to read
The Price family has spent generations studying the monsters of the world, working to protect them from humanity--and humanity from them. Enter Verity Price. Despite being trained from birth as a cryptozoologist, she'd rather dance a tango than tangle with a demon, and when her work with the cryptid community took her to Manhattan, she thought she would finally be free to pursue competition-level dance in earnest. It didn't quite work out that way... But now, with the snake cult that was killing virgins all over Manhattan finally taken care of, Verity is ready to settle down for some serious ballroom dancinguntil her on-again, off-again, semi-boyfriend Dominic De Luca, a member of the monster-hunting Covenant of St. George, informs her that the Covenant is on their way to assess the city's readiness for a cryptid purge. With everything and everyone she loves on the line, there's no way Verity can take that lying down. Alliances will be tested, allies will be questioned, lives will be lost, and the talking mice in Verity's apartment will immortalize everything as holy writ--assuming there's anyone left standing when all is said and done. It's a midnight blue-light special, and the sale of the day is on betrayal, deceit...and carnage.

The second InCryptid book was just as fun as the first. McGuire populates her urban fantasy with memorable, entertaining characters—take Istas who walks around asking “if there will be carnage,” for example—and sets them in a world where dragons, talking mice (who happen to really like cake), & other such creatures hide & thrive amongst humans…until the Covenant of St. George shows up to purge them. Humorous with a good dash of danger & mayhem.

Things get dangerous for the cryptids of Manhattan when the Covenant sends in a team to prepare the city for a purge. And Verity finds she‘s not alone in her fight.

I continue to love the cryptids in this world, and Verity is so snarky & kind. I was actually a little invested in the romance by the end, which I wasn‘t expecting. And I liked how Verity turned to others for help when she had to. I would also like some Aeslin mice, please. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

August book 1:
This was a fast and fun read, and tbh I‘ll read anything McGuire writes, but I have to admit that Verity is so quintessentially Urban Fantasy Heroine that she kinda bugs me. Great side characters, though, so I‘m looking forward to the next book in the series!

#Litsysummercamp Alert! The sky is almost blue again! I had trouble getting to sleep last night, and am having a hard time motivating work-from-home today, so I took it outside. I‘ve been starved for a slightly-nice day! Almost immediately, I had to plug in my computer, but what can you do.

ImperfectCJ Slightly-nice is sometimes all it takes! Too bad electronics don't always cooperate with our plans. 3y

It‘s only two sleeps until the NYC marathon, and I‘ve been a bundle of nerves all week. Luckily, tonight I have Seanan McGuire here to keep my mind distracted. The woman can spin a tale, and this urban fantasy is exactly what I‘m needing tonight.

CareBear Good luck! 6y

InCryptid book 2. I mostly enjoyed these - the world building is great, and I like the MC even if she‘s a little too Snarky Urban Fantasy Heroine - but the love interest is SO DULL. Basically a cardboard cutout in a duster, but with more angst. When your hero is overshadowed by a colony of talking mice, you‘ve got problems (but seriously, the Aeslin mice steal the show). Book 3 focuses on different characters, so I‘m hoping it gets better.

The cavalry has come to town & that‘s bad news for cryptozoologist/dancer/server Verity Price, & not just because they want to hunt the cryptids she‘s protecting. Her boyfriend was once in the cavalry & his current loyalties are unknown. A little like the Watchers‘ Council coming to Sunnydale. Lines are drawn, sides chosen, & our intrepid heroine tortured. The cuckoo finds courage, Dominic a heart, Verity the way home. The mice are still adorable

She's sniffed it and seems to approve. I'm enjoying it, and I'll admit I just sniffed it, too, and it smells wonderfully bookish. #catsoflitsy #smellslikebooks
