Things I'm Seeing Without You
Things I'm Seeing Without You | Peter Bognanni
19 posts | 16 read | 38 to read
Fans of Eleanor and Park and All the Bright Places will laugh and cry as they read this heartbreaking and life-affirming novel about love after the most profound loss. Seventeen-year-old Tess Fowler has just dropped out of high school. She can barely function after learning of Jonah's death. Jonah, the boy she'd traded banter with over texts and heartfelt e-mails. Jonah, the first boy she'd told she loved and the first boy to say it back. Jonah, the boy whose suicide she never saw coming. Tess continues to write to Jonah, as a way of processing her grief and confusion. But for now she finds solace in perhaps the unlikeliest of ways: by helping her father with his new alternative funeral business, where his biggest client is . . . a prized racehorse? As Tess's involvement in her father's business grows, both find comfort in the clients they serve and in each other. But love, loss, and life are so much more complicated than Tess ever thought. Especially after she receives a message that turns her life upside down. Funny, heartbreaking, hopeful, and wondrous, in the vein of Six Feet Under and I'll Give You the Sun, Things I'm Seeing Without You is a beautiful examination of what it means to love someone, to lose someone, and to love again.

I wanted to love this one! A novel about a girl who deals with a friend's suicide by helping her father run an alternative funeral business is literally a plot made for me. And parts of it were great! But ultimately it didn't work for me. I didn't get the romantic relationship at all and the zany road trip felt very out of place.

This was an amazing book. I was hooked from the first page to the last. It was a little messed up but in a good way. I recommend reading.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It‘s so, so important to have YA novels about serious topics like depression and suicide, because maybe reading a book like this could inspire someone who‘s struggling to seek help. But there were some things I would have changed about the way this story was told.

LiterRohde Wait!? Did I write a memoir I don‘t know about? 6y
Eggs Well played 😉😅 6y
quietlycuriouskate See that scraggy patch of land between the warring nations of "nothing really matters" and "but everything matters"? That's my homeland, that is. 6y

ChiranjeeviKulkarni Didn't Eliot write this in a not so cryptic way? "We think of the key, each in his prison. Thinking of the key, each confirms a prison”. 6y
Eggs I'll take your word for it! Sounds nice, esoteric in its own way @ChiranjeeviKulkarni 6y

I wanted to love this one. I saw a book trailer for it a few months ago from Penguin and thought it‘d be the next Fault in Our Stars. However, there was way too much teen angst in here. I realize that Tess was grieving and going through a complicated time in her life, but her character annoyed me. There were also a bunch of side characters that had potential, but I felt like their stories fell flat and weren‘t fleshed out. An average YA read.

jwashreads I felt the same way. Of course, I also don't like reading a book that makes me feel nothing besides sad. It seems like there have been a lot of YA books about grief lately. 6y
Texreader Amazing review. Thanks 6y
WeeziesBooks I've been on the fence about reading this one. Thanks for the great review! 6y
Kaylamburson I‘m glad I‘m not alone, @jwashreads. And I agree about all the depressing YA books being “trendy”. I love the light and fluffy YA. If I am going to read something more depressing, I at least need it to blow me away. 6y
Kaylamburson Thanks, @Texreader and @WeeziesBooks! It has a lot of great reviews elsewhere, so maybe I‘m in the minority 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y

Quick, vulnerable, and somewhat emotional read about grief and moving on. Main character experiences a loss of someone close to her and then continues to learn more about their relationship that she was previously unaware of as the story goes on. Shoutout to @everlocalwest for gifting me this one!

Ms_T That cover is gorgeous ❤️ (edited) 6y
everlocalwest So glad you enjoyed this one! I never got around to reading the ARC but I have finished copy that I need to get to soon. I'm interested in alternative death care and death positivity so I've been really interested in reading this. 6y

Yay for more #bookmail! And this time it‘s because I actually won a giveaway! I never win a thing, and enter what seems to be hundreds of contests constantly - I won ‘Things I‘m Seeing Without You‘ from @penguinrandomhouse and ‘Wither‘ was a trade with someone! Can I please have book mail every day?

Happy belated National Book Lover's Day!
I was too busy book shopping to post yesterday. :D HPB had a special - free tote with any purchase and I can't turn down a tote bag.

Also, they had these #PenguinTeenGameChangers free samplers hanging out in their Teen section, so I snatched them up. Arcs would be better, but I'll take what I can get!

nicholes.book.nook Great titles!!! I adored TY&OL! 7y
