This is a fun a race against the clock to solve a murder & save an innocent man from a public hanging! š¸‡

Aside from some diversions about cricket, I really enjoyed the writing. Definitely anti-death penalty, Cornwell doesn‘t spare any of what is repulsive about it.

I notice Cornwell is (was?) prolific, but alas seems most of his books are war centered?

AlaMich I read one of his books set in the Middle Ages (I think?) and very much enjoyed his writing style and the story. However, as you say, there was so much violence and so many battles, I decided not to continue reading his work. (edited) 1mo

LeahBergen My husband loves his stuff and they‘re ALL pretty much battle-driven. š† I‘ve enjoyed the first few Uthred books (The Last Kingdom series, I think it‘s called). 1mo

You can rest easy @Andrew65. š‚ This historical mystery was a joy to listen to and I almost wish that Cornwell would do an entire series staring Rider Sandman. Great characters, a solid plot, and beautiful narration by Jonathan Keeble make this an all-around winner and one I can recommend without reservation.

DGRachel @CoverToCoverGirl I was really disappointed by that one. This is where I have trouble with Cornwell - I expected it to be more like Sharon Kay Penman with the focus on the king and the battle, not an archer who hallucinates conversations with obscure saints. I really liked The Winter King, but didn't enjoy the rest of that trilogy, and after Azincourt/Agincourt, I gave up on Cornwell. 5y

CoverToCoverGirl Oh wow! I really liked it - a lot. That just goes to show once again why I love Litsy so much.. we can respectfully disagree on this one. I thought Hook was a fascinating character surrounded by very interesting historical facts. It‘s regrettable that, that wasn‘t your experience with that particular book by him. I‘m glad you gave him other try though. I‘ll have to add Gallows‘s Thief to my TBR list. 5y

DGRachel @CoverToCoverGirl That‘s definitely one of my favorite things about Litsy, too. If you enjoy Gallows Thief, you may want to consider this one. It has a similar tone and the audiobook narrator is exceptional

DGRachel @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I've noticed quite a few books disappear from Audible lately. It's why I'm buying more and more books in print. I don't have to worry suddenly losing access to books I paid for unless there's some sort of disaster at my house, but we won't go there. 5y

I've found a new favorite narrator! I started listening to The Violent Century by Lavie Tidhar on my commute, but it jumps around in time so much I'm having trouble following the narrative. I may have to switch to print. However, the narrator, Jonathan Keeble is AMAZING! I ā¯¤ļø¸ā¯¤ļø¸ā¯¤ļø¸ā¯¤ļø¸his voice, so I downloaded this one to try. His voice is so soothing. He needs to narrate all the things.
