Healthy Brain, Happy Life
Healthy Brain, Happy Life | Wendy Suzuki
7 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
A neuroscientist transforms the way we think about our brain, our health and our personal happiness in this clear, informative and inspiring guide - a blend of personal memoir, science narrative and practical advice that bring the human brain into focus as never before, revealing the powerful connection between exercise, learning, memory and cognitive abilities. Nearing forty, Dr Wendy Suzuki was at the pinnacle of her career. An award-winning university professor and world-renowned neuroscientist, she had tenure, her own successful research lab, prestigious awards, and international renown. But despite her professional success, she was overweight, lonely and tired, and knew that her life had to change. Wendy started simply - by going to an exercise class. Eventually, she noticed that not only did she begin to get fit, she also became sharper, had more energy, and her memory improved. Being a neuroscientist, she wanted to know why. What she learned transformed her body and her life. Now, it can transform yours. In this fascinating book, Suzuki makes neuroscience easy to understand, interweaving her personal story with groundbreaking research, and offering practical, short exercises - four-minute Brain Hacks - to engage your mind and improve your memory, your ability to learn new skills, and function more efficiently. Taking us on an amazing journey inside the brain as never before, Suzuki helps us unlock the keys to neuroplasticity that can change our brains or bodies and, ultimately, our lives.

I was seriously invested in her romantic life and was maybe hoping for a reunion at the end between her and French boy. She seemed to really like him still but I guess it wasn't like that. It's a strange way of closure but I also really liked it

#TIL quite a bit about the hippocampus like how memory resides in there and the amygdala. The hippocampus is also necessary for creativity and creating images of the past and future. In one experiment, a person with a damaged hippocampus couldn't visualize himself at the beach but could still feel sensation and hear noises #nonfiction #Neuroscience

rsteve388 Fascinating stuff always so cool to learn about the brain while using the brain to learn about it's self wild! 4y

#TIL about patient HM who had a great impact on how #Neuroscience understands #memory. Because he had a serious case of epilepsy, scientists removed his hippocampus and amagdala in hopes of lessening or curing his seizures. While this was a "success", HM was left entirely dependant on his family. He could no longer create memories #nonfiction

I wonder how he felt, having to relive every moment constantly. Died 2008

Clwojick I think this book would fascinate me if i listened to it on audio, but could see it being a bit of a dry physical read. Which format did you do? 4 pt. 4y
coffees @Clwojick I did the audiobook and I think it works well, the author has a way of making it a bit exciting (altho yeah some parts are a bit dry), but I think it also helps keep you interested bc she talks about her life. it's like half memoir half technical 4y

I feel like its been forever since I read something! And since my loan is expiring soon, I thought I'd get on with this one. I thought it was going to be a boring science book but it's been fun to far. It's an entertaining combo of #autobiography and #neuroscience book with #brainhacks to a happier #lifestyle. Enjoying it so far #nonfiction

Not the book I thought it would be... some interesting insights to brain functions and studies but was more of a personal journal/ biography book than anything else, which would have been fine if it was marketed as such....

Weekend TBR: I can't show what I'm reading because I'm working on book candidates for my 2017 BOTNS Postal book group. This is my Birthday stack minus 'Healthy Brain, Happy Life' which I read already and set free (in a local little library). It was a great read that explains the neuroscience behind why exercise and meaningful relationships leads to feeling happy! Aloha Friday 😎🌺 #dogsoflitsy

Zelma Five Days at Memorial is fantastic though difficult topic to read. 7y

Bookchipmunk @Zelma @Reviewsbylola It's been on my wish list for a long time so I'm excited to read it. It will probably be my "F" choice for #LitsyAtoZ ? 7y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Awesome! We are healthy!! ;). If only doctors would prescribe books a bit more, the world would be a better place. 8y
Alfoster Yes! @ Riveted_Reader_Melissa We all need to show our doctors this and get insurance to pay for our books! Better than drugs, right?? 8y
Alfoster @Riveted_Reader_Melissa As you can see, I'm not very good at this! 8y
