The Pianist
The Pianist: The Extraordinary True Story of One Man's Survival in Warsaw, 1939-1945 | Wladyslaw Szpilman
17 posts | 41 read | 23 to read
Named one of the Best Books of 1999 by the Los Angeles Times, The Pianist is now a major motion picture directed by Roman Polanski and starring Adrien Brody (Son of Sam). The Pianist won the Cannes Film Festival's most prestigious prizethe Palme d'Or. On September 23, 1939, Wladyslaw Szpilman played Chopin's Nocturne in C-sharp minor live on the radio as shells exploded outsideso loudly that he couldn't hear his piano. It was the last live music broadcast from Warsaw: That day, a German bomb hit the station, and Polish Radio went off the air. Though he lost his entire family, Szpilman survived in hiding. In the end, his life was saved by a German officer who heard him play the same Chopin Nocturne on a piano found among the rubble. Written immediately after the war and suppressed for decades, The Pianist is a stunning testament to human endurance and the redemptive power of fellow feeling.

#MayCharacters - Merciful: Compassion and Forgiveness. A saved life. A legacy unbroken. A gift restored. A change of fate. An unexpected imprisonment. A justifiable death (who is to judge?). A hurt unreachable but never forgotten. A renewal in time. A remembrance of what a people could be when we listen to the music!

Lest We Forget.

A (by no means exhaustive) reading list of the World Wars, pulled from my shelves. What book have you found to be the most effective and affecting book about WW1 or WW2?

Butterfinger I recently finished The Sandcastle Girls. It will forever hold an impact on me. 4y

The last live broadcast on Polish Radio, on September 23, 1939, was Chopin's Nocturne in C# Minor, played by a young pianist named Wladyslaw Szpilman, until his playing was interrupted by German shelling. It was the same piece and the same pianist, when broadcasting resumed six years later.

The real story of a polish jew during World War II. Amazing, depressing, somehow even uplifting. Recommend!

So heartbreaking yet so inspiring. I wish I could find more words than that. But right now, words fail me.
