What Remains of Me
What Remains of Me: A Novel | Alison Gaylin
20 posts | 23 read | 16 to read
The USA Today bestselling author of the Brenna Spector series returns with her most ambitious book to date, a spellbinding novel of psychological suspense, set in the glamorous, wealthy world of Hollywooda darkly imaginative and atmospheric tale of revenge and betrayal, presumed guilt and innocence lost, dirty secrets and family ties reminiscent of the bestsellers of Laura Lippman, Gillian Flynn, and Harlan Coben. Nobodys perfect. Everybodys got a drawer somewhere with something hidden in it. On June 28, 1980the hottest night of the yearKelly Michelle Lund shoots and kills Oscar-nominated director John McFadden at a party in his home. . . . And instantly becomes a media sensation, her chilling smile fodder for national nightmares. For years, speculation swirls over the enigmatic seventeen-year-olds motives, information shes refused to share. Convicted of the murder, she loses her youth and her freedombut keeps her secrets to herself. Thirty years laterand five years after her release from prisonthe past has come back to haunt Kelly. Her father-in-law, movie legend Sterling Marshall, is found in a pool of blood in his home in the Hollywood Hillsdead from a shot to the head, just like his old friend John McFadden. Once again, Kelly is suspected of the high profile murder. But this time, shes got some unexpected allies who believe shes innocentof both killingsand want to help her clear her name. But is she? Written with masterful precision and control, What Remains of Me brilliantly moves forward and back in time, playing out the murders side by sideinterweaving subtle connections and peeling away layers of events to reveal the shocking truth.

I appreciate that Gaylin attempted to veer from the typical thriller formula, but this one missed the mark. The burn was too slow and then the ending crammed in everything but the kitchen sink in an attempt to compensate. I can generally appreciate some far fetched plot twists, but a few of these were real face palmers and I just couldn't suspend disbelief enough to buy it. Disappointing, but not a total waste of time. Just meh. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Reading three thrillers by the same author in succession was overkill, and I need a break now. 😅 I didn‘t love this story. Fictional Hollywood types and their plight have been done to absolute death, but to Gaylin‘s credit, this is well-written and laid out. Kelly Michelle Lund has served 25 years for the shooting death of a movie producer. She reenters society, but soon after, both past and present come together breaking all hell loose.

A. L. Gaylin's crime thriller is an okay but uninspired read that treads the well-worn path of Hollywood's elite abusing their power and position and the secrets that this creates but while I enjoyed the central friendship in the book, the story's hampered by dull characters who it's difficult to relate to.

Having a much needed reading spurt toward the end of the year. 100 pages in and loving this already. A mix of noir, mystery and old Hollywood and comes highly recommended by the likes of Megan Abbott and Sarah Weinman.

Pretty good book. Again wasn't always focused on listening to it but I was able to understand what was going on still. Typical story of Hollywood elite and how fucked up that place really is.

I'm a little baffled here I guess...Laura Lippman and Megan Abbot both gave this one positive blurbs and it was just...meh, to me. Nothing was WRONG with this book, per se; I just realized I was pushing forward because I felt like I *should* be liking it, not really that I actually was. I made it 56% through (much longer than I normally give the "assessment phase") and just plain wasn't gripped by the characters or narrative. I tried.

This book was alright. It felt like it was missing something. The end was a bit too wishy washy.
