DC: The New Frontier Deluxe Edition
DC: The New Frontier Deluxe Edition | Darwyn Cooke
Writer/illustrator Darwyn Cooke's critically acclaimed masterpiece DC: THE NEW FRONTIER is celebrated in this trade paperback edition featuring new story pages, detailed annotations, alternate sequences and an extensive gallery of sketches, pinups, action figure art and much more! In the 1950s, Cold War paranoia has resulted in the mystery men of the Golden Age being outlaws. Stalwarts such as Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman continued to fight for truth and justice, but as the world hurtles toward an uncertain future, it would take a new breed of hero to define the American Way. DC: THE NEW FRONTIER takes readers on an epic journey from the end of the Golden Age of heroes to the beginnings of the legendary Justice League of America. For the first time, DC collects the entire epic DC: THE NEW FRONTIER in a single trade paperback, along with sketch and background material from the absolute edition. Collects DC: THE NEW FRONTIER #1-6, JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE NEW FRONTIER SPECIAL #1 and material from ABSOLUTE DC: THE NEW FRONTIER.

Darwyn Cooke wrote and illustrated this throwback story of the Justice League's origin that is an homage to the themes and aesthetics of Silver Age comics. My one complaint is that there might be too many characters who are too similar.

Although I'm not always a fan of the more cartoony/caricature style of drawing I understand why Cooke felt it would fit this story. I have to say that the only reason I've taken so long to pick it up is the style. Waiting was a mistake. This is absolutely fantastic. The way Cooke weaves the destinies of real life comic book writers and artist into the fabric of a superhero story is extremely powerful.

I'm re-reading this in memory of the great Darwyn Cooke, who passed away at the obscenely young age of 54 yesterday. This remains my favorite superhero story EVER. And Darwyn Cooke will always be my favorite artist.

I resolved to explore DC in 2016, but my enthusiasm flagged after a couple of New 52 titles. THE NEW FRONTIER changed that. This celebration of the Silver Age DCU is as accessible to newbies as to established fans, and it left me keen to learn more about these iconic characters.

FourofFiveWits I heard earlier this writer / artist passed away from cancer. RIP. 8y
