#TBRPile 📚 “Somebody warned them that we were coming.”
It was an excellent fantasy story with a well written and complex world, and a magic system that was able to hold itself up consistently.
I liked the characters well enough, though I didnt fall in love with them the way I would have liked too, which was the only thing really letting the story down for me. Even so, it was packed full of flawed, funny and badass characters - there just weren't any I personally was able to connect to.
Today was the perfect day for a walk with an audiobook across the prom! I love living so close to the sea on days like today 😁
So far as my book goes, I was having a little trouble getting into it at first as the main character Galharrow seemed to be a miserable, sulky drunk and little else, but his colours started to show through a couple of chapters in, and suddenly I'm 14 chapters in and dying to know what happens next! 😅
Oh I loved every inch of this. The grittiness, the suspense, the harrow and the feeling of dread and loss, that bleak and melancholy feeling that creeped through the entire story, it was all so wonderfully pieced together. You could feel the despair and lost hope as each page turned, but every now and then you felt that small surge of hope shine through.
Finally back at home from work. Put some music on, made a tea, lit a candle, fluffed the pillows, and now getting serious about a good 3 hour chunk of reading time. 🤘
F-you winter and work! Can't bring me down!
(I'm not reading the tagged/pictured book right now, but it's looking like it's next up on the good'ol tbr pile). 👍
When you are sitting on the front steps enjoying a coffee and the mail person walks up and gives you a new fantasy novel... 😍
#bookmail is the bestest! Thank you, past me, for thinking of now me. ❤️
I've been wanting to read this grimdark series since I first heard about it. I believe the 2nd book is out already too. 👌
“Only three kinds of people willingly enter the Misery: the desperate, the stupid and the greedy.”
Haven‘t read any fantasy novels for a while. Got a feeling this one is going to be pretty awesome #edmcdonald #fantasy #grimdark
Dark, brooding and skilfully plotted. Just one of my favourite books. Not bad for a first time author.
@katekrug Thank you so much for all my goodies!!!! I can‘t wait to read this one, looks soooo good!!! Sorry for the horrid delay in posting. Life gets in the way of Litsy sometimes!!! 💞💜🤸🏽♀️📚📚 thank you so much again!!! I hope yours got there safe!!! #dystopianblues
Corruption doesn't take root in isolation, it embeds itself where the soil is fertile.
But there are some things that, no matter how foolish, no matter how much you're going to regret it, you choose to do it anyway. Because it's the only option you got.
Ed McDonald's solid debut fantasy novel (the first in a trilogy) has great world building, an interesting political and magical system and an ambivalent view towards wizards but I found that Galharrow tries too hard to be morally ambivalent, the female characters (particular Ezabeth) are under baked and I found that although the time jumps kept the plot moving, it meant that the story didn't have time to breathe.
ARC #2 is off to a good start!
Reading about a bounty hunter named Ryhalt Galharrow as he treks through a place called the Misery...

I'm so stoked to start this! I was at an event the other day that the author was at and he read an extract and it sounds AMAZING!
Not that it didn't sound it before but still! I'm so in the mood for a good fantasy book too!

A very fun, gritty science fiction novel! Ed McDonald does a great job drawing up each character and making them all fascinating for different reasons. His settings are dark an intriguing. I recommend this to fans of dystopian sci-fi, dark magic stories, or anyone who enjoyed the grittiness of the TV show Firefly.
About little more than halfway through this ARC of Black Wing by Ed McDonald but not loving it as much as I wanted to...Still think It's worth my time though. It has many elements that I love in my fantasy reads the most interesting being the magical system and the belief system.
