Sometimes you need to read a book that rips your heart open. I think that‘s going to be this one.

At the age of 33 Simon Fitzmaurice was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Simon was a devoted husband, father, and Irish filmmaker. The diagnosis didn't change that. Defying expectations, Simon lived years longer then expected with help from his family, doctors, and a rarely prescribed home ventilator. But this book isn't about ALS. Rather it's a memoir, written using an eye-gaze computer, of a man who refused to give up the life he loved.

Quick, powerful book exploring quality of life when dealing with a terminal illness. Another book that focuses on the beauty of everyday life and explained choices with honesty rather than pontificating.

In 2010, his lungs collapsed & he defied medical opinion by staying only on a ventilator. The young filmmaker, father of 5 small children, tell us his story in beautiful,stark prose. Finished this last week. It was a nice, quick, inspiring little read. The short choppy sentences were hard to get used to at first but they grew on me eventually and it moved the story along at a nice pace.

This one is both heartbreaking and beautiful. When Fitzmaurice is diagnosed with ALS, he chooses to live and to love. He is a film maker and you can see that in his writing -- he creates scenes and moments throughout the memoir that connect you emotionally to his experiences. Exquisite.

A short, evocative memoir. At 34, Irish filmmaker Simon Fitzmaurice was diagnosed with ALS. His doctors began to counsel him on his end-of-life options when the disease took away his ability to breathe on his own, but Simon knew it wasn't his time to go. Surrounded by the love of his family and friends, there was so much to live for. It may not be the life he would have imagined for himself, but it's still a life.

Some inspiration to get me going on my bus ride to work this morning. This song ("Gotta get up / Listen to me.") may carry me through the day. This book is beautiful; I think it's going to break my heart and fill me with light at the same time. "Every breath of us is meaning." Let's do this day.
