Set in the backwoods of East Tennessee and based on a series of true-life murders outside Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1963, CHILD OF GOD is a terrifying tale of 27 yo homeless Lester Ballard. A victim of neglect/abuse, he roams the countryside taking young women. McCarthy writes in a quirky and concise objective voice and lets the reader choose on the continuum of judgment vs empathy.

“Some people you cain‘t do nothin with.”

I think McCarthy wants us to struggle with that idea as a society. Truth is, after reading this gruesome short novel full of disgusting scene after disgusting scene, I don‘t want to think about it anymore.

Child of God follows the story of the depraved Lester Ballard. This is a bleak story, and not for the squeamish. Be prepared for awful stuff.
McCarthy, master of creating horrific worlds with magical words drew me into the descent of Lester. Watching Lester go from social outcast to something more feral, and the horrendous acts he committed is something I‘ll think about and remember for years to come.
This was my #doublespin for March!

Well, holy hell, another brilliant, disturbing, depraved Southern tale by surely the greatest living American writer, Cormac McCarthy. Make way for murder, arson, necrophilia, cave dwelling and other assorted blasphemes, all rendered in a lyrical prose style that is nothing short of humbling in it's poetic brilliance.

Highly disturbing and yet strangely accessible for a McCarthy novel.

Fun small read. If sex with dead bodies isn‘t your thing, stay away. If sex with dead bodies is your thing, see a doctor.

Even knowing when I started this book that the subject matter was difficult, it still didn't prepare me for the content. This one is hard for me to review because words like "love" or "good" really don't fit. McCarthy's prose is exceptional and he has a way of writing about the most vile topics in an eye-opening way. This is a pick for me because it is so well written and it's a book I will never forget.

Definitely not for everyone but another solid read from one of my favorite authors. Be warned that there is much violence, animal abuse, and necrophilia. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another great book by one of my favorite authors. His books have such a raw, authentic feeling and this was no exception. Not sure how many authors can make you feel sorry for and despise a main character at the same time, but McCarthy pulls it off with seemingly no trouble.

4/5

#threewordtitles #riotgrams I was picky with this one, and excluded titles with "the" as one of the words for my own amusement.

Is it just me or did others really not like this book? Thank goodness it's a short book or it would be a DNF for me.

Read my first Cormac McCarthy today. It was one of the darkest books I've read but I enjoyed it (maybe not the right word to use) It is definitely not for everyone though as it deals with some pretty heavy topics.

DGRachel I love Cormac McCarthy! 8y

This is one of those stories that seems light at first but dives quickly into the depths of human darkness, and it's iconic McCarthy in its poetry and humanity.

Cormac McCarthy puts the most grotesque human behavior under a microscope but refuses to pass moral judgment, leaving that task to the reader--who can't help feeling uncomfortably complicit in Ballard's atrocities. This little monstrosity is strangely compelling, disturbingly believable. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
