The bestselling novel in the US in 1980 was another Michener, this one spanning South African history from precolonial times to the later 20th century, mostly from viewpoints of white settlers and their descendants. My edition runs 1,200 pages which is a lot of pages to spend in the headspace of these rough bigots slouching towards apartheid. Michener's research and writing are noteworthy, but the experience leaves me needing a 1,200-page shower.

swynn Also: despite the weakness of its criticism, The Covenant was banned in South Africa. Read #BannedBooks ! 2y
BarbaraJean I bought this one because it was recommended reading for a leadership program I did in South Africa in 2007. They changed the book rec to Cry, the Beloved Country and I read that instead (probably a better option!). I lived in South Africa for three years and have been back in the States for over 10 years… and I still haven‘t read The Covenant. Your review doesn‘t have me rushing to pick it up now… 😆 (edited) 2y
swynn @BarbaraJean I'm definitely not the one to convince you to pick up the Michener except maybe for weight training. I read “Cry the Beloved Country“ years ago and agree that it's a much better book. 2y

Well, crap. Despite my best efforts September has arrived and I guess I'll make the best of it. Here's my #BookSpin #DoubleSpin #BookSpinBingo card for September, pretty heavy with reads I didn't get to last month.

@TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks September is here WAY too soon!!! 2y

Pickpick

An interesting read. I have this love/hate relationship with Michener‘s books. They are intriguing, informative, and well researched, but let‘s face it, they are also a bit dated. This book takes the reader through the history what is now South Africa, but only up to apartheid and diamonds. A long read with tons of characters. It takes time to read it, but it also gives a lot. Published today this book would be shorter.

Andrew65 Have you ever been read any books by Edward Rutherfurd.

E.g.

Tove_Reads @andrew65 Yea I have, I think we read a book at the same time some years ago. Was it Sarum? 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads yes more than likely, the other ones I have read are the Dublin ones. I really need to read more of them. 2y

Bajoran religion, for me, is the Wesley Crusher of DS9. I have not interest in it, or episodes that revolve around it. That said, I did enjoy Marc Alaimo's wonderfully evil Gul Dukat, one of Star Trek's best villains.

RamsFan1963 Sorry I don't know why my pictures are turning out so bad tonight, they're clear when I post them but then they come out looking like this... 5y

Order a few books again. To be fair, I had to! If hard Brexit will be reality it might get more complicated for me to order all the books I want... Politicians should think about how their decisions might hit hard on a compulsive reader like me!

Slowly making my way through my first Michener. No better fit for me than to read a book about South Africa where my father is from and where I spent the early part of my life before moving back to America. I am loving it so far!
