The Smiling Man | Joseph Knox

After enjoying his debut novel, Sirens, I was really looking forward to reading this. Overall I did enjoy it but found that some parts seemed to drag a bit and it felt like a bit of a chore trying to keep up with the different characters. I flew through the last few parts and found that more gripping. I would read another of his books and haven‘t been put off. #josephknox #manchester #thesmilingman #sequel #detectiveaidanwaits

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. Normally I‘m not interested in romantic stories but this wasn‘t too 🤢 I found it readable and true to the times. However, I found the characters a bit flat and thought more could have been made of the eugenics sub plot, but that seemed to fizzle out. I was disappointed with the ending and it felt like the author couldn‘t be bothered to explain what happened to Ella.

This book wasn‘t as dry as I thought it would be. I did find it a bit repetitive as it seemed that every other word was ‘estrous‘ or ‘cycle‘. It was OK but overall not really anything that grabbed my attention or got me interested in learning more about hormones. Maybe one for the more scientifically minded person. #hormonal #science #lab

Got an advance copy of this to review and just started it the other day. Much more readable than I thought it was going to be. #science #hormonal #preview #advancecopy

I loved this book! Extremely well done characters. An interesting insight into loneliness and mental health. Makes you think.

I read this for my book club. I found that I didn‘t really warm to any of the characters and that it dragged out in places yet the ending felt rushed. An interesting idea for a novel but didn‘t really do it for me.

Listening to the audiobook of this. The lady reading it is very posh so most characters sound like the queen! Persevering though as the story isn‘t too bad. #audiobook #poshnarrator

This is the second book in the Aaron Falk detective series. I really enjoyed it, as the tension ramps up the chapters get shorter and you can‘t help but keep reading. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

I knew nothing about the Greek myths before reading this book. It‘s well written and researched yet still readable and not dry. Stephen Fry doesn‘t disappoint 😊

I read this book for my book club and this was the only reason I persevered with it! The book was very flat, both in plot and mood. I didn‘t find myself wanting to find out what happened next and wouldn‘t rush to read another book by this author.

This is the third book in the Cate Austin series. I found it very readable but I did guess the suspect and was a little disappointed with the ending. It seemed to have such a big build up and then felt rushed. However, I‘d still recommend this book and look forward to reading the next one.

What a struggle this book was to read! Unfortunately I found it awful from start to finish. Poor characters I couldn‘t care less about and a pitiful plot that didn‘t really go anywhere. The narration jumped around from character to character and across years. So disappointed with this book and only persevered for book club. Definitely wouldn‘t rush to read any more by this author.

This is a good old fashioned murder mystery. There are quite a lot of characters but I never got confused as to who was who. A very readable book although I did guess one of the culprits!

I felt like there was far too much going on in this book and I really struggled to like any of the main characters! I just managed to finish it but it didn‘t grip me as I thought it would. Quite disappointed with this one.

This book isn‘t something I would normally pick up as I prefer more of a thriller style. The characters were well developed and you really empathised with the main character. It was a readable story and I would recommend it.

This is the fourth book in the Macrae series and one of the most grisly so far! As always the characters are well developed and there‘s an ongoing story with the recurring characters. It‘s quite a chunky book and there‘s a lot of twists before they discover the suspect. Looking forward to the next book in the series but may need a break to read something more cheerful!

I had high hopes for this book and thought I would really enjoy it. However, I felt it was drawn out in parts. I didn‘t care much about the characters and wasn‘t very motivated to find out what happened next. I haven‘t read the first book in the series so not sure if this makes a difference.

I read this for my book club and it just wasn‘t my cup of tea. There were some promising ideas in the plot but they all seemed to Peter out. There could have been a lot more about the historical period and better character development. I wouldn‘t rush to read another book by this author.

I found this book to be very readable. I started reading it on a train journey and didn‘t put it down once! The characters were gritty and real, the plot was harrowing at times but still kept you interested. There were twists and turns and I enjoyed the book. I‘ve seen another post on here advising that this book is the first in a series so I‘ll keep an eye out for the others. The only down side I found was errors in the Kindle version.

Don't Look for Me | Mason Cross
Mehso-so

This is the second book I‘ve read by this author. The characters were a good mix of likeable and not so likeable. The plot was alright but I felt the end was a bit disappointing. At times it felt like the story was dragged out and the book could have been shorter.

Lie with Me | Sabine Durrant

Despite most of the characters being unlikeable I really enjoyed this book. The main character appears to be a pathological liar and I liked how the plot twisted and kept you reading. In the end I actually felt a little sorry for him. I‘m going to keep an eye out for more books by this author.

I felt this book was too short. It seemed that all of a sudden everything was resolved and I felt some parts were left unanswered. The plot seemed quite promising, a girl is kidnapped and her dad is forced to choose between his wife or daughter. I would maybe read another book by this author.

This book was a short, easy read. I didn‘t warm to any of the characters, apart from having some sympathy for the mother. I‘m not a spiritual person but liked the idea of having one more day with a loved one.
