Floodland
Floodland | Marcus Sedgwick
4 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
Marcus Sedgwick's award-winning debut novel about surviving in a sinking world. Winner of the Branford Boase Award, FLOODLAND is an unstoppable force in young adult fiction. Imagine that a few years from now England is covered by water, and Norwich is an island. Zoe, left behind in the confusion when her parents escaped, survives there as best she can. Alone and desperate among marauding gangs, she manages to dig a derelict boat out of the mud and gets away to Eels Island. But Eels Island, whose raggle-taggle inhabitants are dominated by the strange boy Dooby, is full of danger too. The belief that she will one day find her parents spurs Zoe on to a dramatic escape in a story of courage and determination that leads to an unexpected and touching conclusion. FLOODLAND has a powerful and emotive theme, handled with warmth and humanity.

Vermont is in bad shape this morning (and there's still more to come, at least up north). Luckily our house isn't in the flood zone (at least not yet 🤞). Hope all the other Littens who live in the area are doing OK. How are you @Suet624 ? I know Montpelier got hit pretty badly.

Suet624 I keep forgetting you live here! I'm up in the Village of Hyde Park and currently okay but all the rivers around me are over their banks. Johnson, next to me, is completely swamped. All the towns around are flooded and roads washed out. I feel incredibly lucky to live in a sweet spot (at least for now) of roads still intact. Still raining up here too. Johnson Library is underwater.
10mo
The_Penniless_Author @Suet624 That's good. We're in a part of Essex that's fine (for now, at least), but around Route 2 where it heads towards Richmond is flooding pretty badly. The Winooski River isn't supposed to crest until this afternoon. Originally they said around 20 ft., but now it's up to 21.5. They said the entire highway from Jonesville to Lake Champlain could be underwater soon! 10mo

Suet624 How‘s it going in your neck of the woods? Have much clean up to do? 9mo
The_Penniless_Author @Suet624 No, Essex is fine. Only Route 117 and the other backroads to Williston flooded (which happens all the time, although not nearly so badly), and amazingly made it through without any major damage. Route 2 to Richmond was also bad, and a bunch of people lost their cars in the park-and-ride lot, but overall we came out of it fine. How about you? Obviously, Johnson must be a complete mess. 9mo
Suet624 Good to hear about your areas. My heart breaks for Johnson. Also the library, Jenna‘s Promise and the Health Center. 💔 seems like all Lamoille County was badly damaged .. those towns you don‘t hear of often too .. Cavendish, Hardwick. I think Cambridge and Jeff are mucking themselves out. I swear my little village is surrounded by devastation and shock and yet we are fine. I feel so fortunate and so sad. 9mo
The_Penniless_Author @Suet624 It's sort of surreal. Other than the Intervale and areas I mentioned over towards Richmond and Bolton, Chittenden County came out unscathed. For us, it wasn't much more than a day and a half of moderate rain (and of course, the Winooski River raging like I've never seen before, but even that was more of a curiosity/photo-op than a problem). People are holding donation drives and giving money, but other than that life is going on as usual. 9mo
The_Penniless_Author @Suet624 It was awful hearing about all the businesses that flooded in Montpelier and Waterbury - places we used to go to all the time, like Prohibition Pig and Three Penny Taproom and Rabble Rouser. I know a lot of them were still recovering from the pandemic, so I hope they manage to survive. 9mo
Leftcoastzen @The_Penniless_Author @Suet624 I‘ve been thinking of you both , hope you stay safe! My heart breaks for Vermont flooding . 9mo

Not Book related except that it kept me from getting home and reading!
Front of the school. See the van? It is backing up because a truck went through down at the corner and the water was to its headlights. It took us until 4:10 with at least one parent wading through waist high water to get her two babies to send all students home safe. We let out at 3:00 for reference.
👇🏼

Slajaunie We were not even sure the buses were going to make it for a while. I thought James, my husband, was going to have to drive the 45 minutes from Thibodaux to come get me in his truck. That is if he could get through. Roads were closed everywhere. Luckily, I parked in the back and there is a huge canal to drain the water. I left school around 4:30 with another teacher in tow because she parked in the front.

Haven‘t been on Litsy in MONTHS but trying to make the time to start posting on here again and looking forward to seeing everyone else‘s posts too! Hoping to post some reviews for books I‘ve been reading recently very soon. For now, here is a picture of our river earlier this evening - it has been raining nonstop and this is wayyyyy higher than it normally is! Luckily the rain has stopped for now and the water levels are starting to drop again. 😬

sprainedbrain Good to see you again! 5y
Zelma Yay, glad to see you back! 👋 5y

A good short dystopian future novel. #childrensbook #fiction adventure

RaimeyGallant I'm really starting to love dystopian. :) Welcome to Litsy! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. It's the link in my bio on my page in case you're interested. :) 6y
Kt.hart Thank you. It was useful. I‘m trying to keep a record of all my reading this year and broaden my tastes. @RaimeyGallant (edited) 6y
KateFulfordAuthor @Kt.hart perhaps you could consider my debut? Reviews are saying: “I loved this book more than I initially thought I would. Fulford infuses her characters with intense personalities that are prone to clashing with those of others. I loved Eve from the very beginning..." It‘s been nominated for The People's Book Prize 2018 too!
