The Gates of Damascus
The Gates of Damascus | Lieve Joris
3 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
Through her intimate contact with local people, author Lieve Joris draws us into the complex world that lies behind the gates of Damascus. And through her friendship with Hala, a Syrian woman, the author reaches beyond stereotypes to understand women's lives and family relationships in an Arab society.

Mehso-so

I just couldn‘t seem to get into this one. It‘s in translation from the original Belgian and the author has written other books that haven‘t been translated so I think we‘re missing the ‘backstory‘ here.

The author goes to stay with her friend in #syria but it is difficult to work out why. It seems to be for a ‘holiday‘ but the country is already under Assad‘s rule, her friend‘s husband is a political prisoner and the author puts her friend ⬇️

squirrelbrain in some dodgy if not dangerous situations. She also is very negative about most things, including her friend‘s political beliefs and lack of ambition. Not for me, but someone might like it for #swapme - shout if you do and I‘ll send it! #readingasia2021 (edited) 4y
BarbaraBB I really liked this one but I read it in Dutch and in the same year she traveled through Syria I did too so it was very recognizable for me. 4y

Very exciting #bookmail received over the last two days - in preparation for #readingasia2021.

#mummysquirrel has a few travel anthology books so we went through those and picked out the extracts we liked the look of.... then looked online. The outcome is 4 pre-loved books for less than (ca total. These are all women travellers.

Happy to swap once we‘ve both read them! #swapme

Tagged book is for #syria - I‘ll tag the others below.

Pickpick

#ReadAroundTheWorld #Syria Belgian writer/journalist Lieve Joris travels through Syria, long before the country collapsed. Her view however is quite interesting. She writes about Hafez Al-Assad, Bashar‘s father and dictator before him. She talks to scared people. Scared of the Mukhabarat and scared because their leader was responsible for massacres like the one in Hama, in 1982. Shocking and very interesting.
