Ford County | John Grisham
9 posts | 25 read | 8 to read
Gripping short stories from the No.1 bestselling author of the legal thriller. Worldwide No.1 bestseller John Grisham takes you into the heart of America's Deep South with a collection of stories connected by the life and crimes of Ford County: a place of harsh beauty where broken dreams and final wishes converge. From a hard-drinking, downtrodden divorce lawyer looking for pay-dirt, to a manipulative death row inmate with one last plea, Ford County features a vivid cast of attorneys, crooks, hustlers, and convicts. Through their stories he paints a unique picture of lives lived and lost in Mississippi. Completely gripping, frequently moving and always entertaining, Ford County brims with the same page-turning quality and heart-stopping drama of his previous bestsellers, and is proof once more why John Grisham is our most popular storyteller.

A kindle special I probably would not have bought had I realised it was short stories but actually quite enjoyed. Grisham brings his characters alive with deft pen portraits - the stories are a real mix but overall I enjoyed even if there is some mining of previous themes

#NovelNovember #Challenge2021

I think🤨 I‘ve learned a good lesson about impulsive book purchases🤦🏻‍♀️ I did not enjoy this one & reading was a chore. I dislike short stories generally & save and except the final story ‘Funny Boy‘, I found myself bored to the point of getting tired every time I picked it up. I‘m happy to finally be done with it.

Andrew65 I felt the same about this. 3y
DieAReader @Andrew65 🥰I thought I was alone!Thankfully it wasn‘t my first he Grisham ‘cause it would have been my last🤣🤫🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
CoverToCoverGirl Thanks for the warning label. I‘ll steer clear of this one! 3y

DieAReader @CoverToCoverGirl Happy to help😉♥️🥰It gives space on #MountTBR for something enjoyable. 3y
Andrew65 @DieAReader I‘m not a fan of short stories. I find John Grisham‘s best books are those published before 2000. He can be variable more recently. 3y
DieAReader @Andrew65 Good to know! I‘ve only read a few (own many others on my #MountTBR shelves😁) & they‘re older ones. 3y
Andrew65 @DieAReader Strongly recommend A Painted House, A Time to Kill and The Testament. 3y

Ford County in Mississippi is the setting for this short story collection-the same locale used for A Time to Kill, A Time for Mercy, and Sycamore Row. Good stories but with Grisham, a whole novel works better for me than unconnected stories.

Dropped off 8 books and grabbed one for myself. This free library is near my YMCA and looks like it could use some more books!

I ❤️ this collection of short stories! It‘s the first time I‘ve ever thoroughly enjoyed each one. On another note, this is 1 of 2 physical books I was reading when my 4-legged kid died due to unexpected complications from surgery. It took me forever to pick it up again, but I finally finished it in her honor. RIP my sweet faithful reading companion. You will always have a place in my lap. 💔🐶

Mehso-so

This was a pleasant enough group of stories starting off well with Blood Drive, but I don't think the other stories lived up to this early promise. John Grisham read the stories in my audiobook version, reading them well generally although he wasn't as good with speech. If you enjoyed A Time to Kill you might enjoy these as they are set in the same area, Ford County.

aprocrastinatingreader I felt the same about these ones; I didn't think they were as good as his other stories 7y
Andrew65 @rebeccareadsalot Glad to see I wasn't alone in this. 7y
aprocrastinatingreader @Andrew65 A Time to Kill was great, though 7y

Andrew65 @rebeccareadsalot A true classic of this genre, also loved the film of it. Have you read the follow-up book? 7y
aprocrastinatingreader @Andrew65 No, I was meaning to. Is it good? 7y
Andrew65 @rebeccareadsalot I've not read it either myself. I meant to over the past week but downloaded Ford County instead of it by mistake! (It was late 😂). Hope to get to it soon. 7y
aprocrastinatingreader @Andrew65 Same. I'll read it eventually. 😂 7y

This audiobook is narrated by the author, John Grisham. #audiobooks

Have you ever listened to a book narrated by the author? Which author?

Do you feel the author narrating their own books is a good Idea? Why?

Who are the good and bad examples of this?

Lmstraubie Yes!! Neil Gaiman!!! 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I read The Gargoyle Hunters and loved it. But when I tried to add audio to gobble faster, I hated the author's narration. He's a writer not a reader. 7y
JewelsEnd I don't like audiobooks in general. I like the voice in my head telling the story. Someone else reading is an intrusion and can easily ruin a story for me. Besides that, I'm a visual person rather than audio. But if I had to pick, I'd rather a good voiceover than an author. Someone who gets paid to speak rather than write. 🙂 7y

Ms_T I‘ve just finished 4 3 2 1 by Paul Auster which he narrated. He narrates all his audiobooks and says reading to his children when they were young was great practice! He‘s does a magnificent job 👍🏻 7y
Andrew65 @Lmstraubie I'd heard Neil Gaiman did a great job. 7y
Andrew65 @JewelsEnd I use audiobooks when commuting as gives me extra reading time but some definitely don't work for me. Also good when I'm tired and can't read a page without falling asleep. 😂. In general I'd agree about a good voice over compared to the author but sure there are exceptions. 7y
Andrew65 @Ms_T Only heard of this one through you. 7y
Andrew65 I'd heard Harlan Coben who I adore did a bad job of one of his books. John Grisham generally doing a good job and certainly gives that southern feel, but could do better with voices. 7y
JewelsEnd @Andrew65 I guess they make sense if you commute. When I drive long distances I listen to podcasts as a story just might put me to sleep😮🚗💥🚑🏥🤕😕 7y
Andrew65 @JewelsEnd That wouldn't be good but actually I find when driving they stop me from feeling tired, especially on long journeys. 7y

Just started listening to Ford County by mistake! I downloaded it thinking it was the follow-up to A Time to Kill! 😱🙄It was late and did do it just before I went to sleep! Of course what I should have downloaded is Sycamore Row! Anyway downloaded it so am now listening to it, even if short stories are not my favourite.

Ms_T Is it an Audible book? You can return it for a refund if it is. 7y
Andrew65 @Ms_T No it is from Scribd. How strange that I never thought about getting it returned! 🙊🙈🙉 7y
