A captivating cross-generational novel from German author Mina Baites about a Jewish family divided by World War II and an inheritance with the power to bring them back together.1914. For Paul, with love. Jewish silversmith Johann Blumenthal engraved those words on his most exquisite creation, a singing filigree bird inside a tiny ornamented box. He crafted this treasure for his young son before leaving to fight in a terrible war to honor his beloved country--a country that would soon turn against his own family.A half century later, Londoner Lilian Morrison inherits the box after the death of her parents. Though the silver is tarnished and dented, this much-loved treasure is also a link to an astonishing past. With the keepsake is a letter from Lilian's mother, telling her daughter for the first time that she was adopted. Too young to remember, Lilian was rescued from a Germany in the grips of the Holocaust. Now only she can trace what happened to a family who scattered to the reaches of the world, a family forced to choose between their heritage and their dreams for the future.

Moving story of a Jewish family across the 1st and 2nd WWs and then finding each other again. A few neat endings, but overall a good read, I enjoyed it.

Cathythoughts Sounds like a good one ❤️👍🏻 4y
squirrelbrain That sprung up out of nowhere - must have been a mood read?! Glad you liked it though.... 4y
TrishB @Cathythoughts a quick, good read 👍🏻 4y

TrishB @squirrelbrain scrolling through my kindle whilst ‘reading‘ American Spy! And then it just held my attention. Definitely a mood read. 😁 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Ahhhh, “whilst”. Love that word. Ok, I‘m going to use it even if my friends here in America think me odd. I love it. It‘s got so much more pizzazz then while...sorry, random thought. I‘m so mad that didn‘t transfer here. I wonder what other English words we adulterated and why. 4y
TrishB @JanuarieTimewalker13 I love these differences! I would never have given that particular word a thought though. There is probably a book somewhere that would tell us all those words 😁😁 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I was thinking about that too!!! What a cool book that would be!! Like a “spot of tea” is a bit ridiculous, but it‘s also a lot of fun. 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 “Up my street” or “Up my alley” I favor the American phrase, there, bc alley makes me think of alley cats. Hahahahaha...it‘s rough and tumble. 4y
TrishB I think it‘s only really posh people say spot of tea, I‘ve definitely never said it and I drink tea literally all the time. It may be regional though and someone will correct me. 4y
TrishB I like alley too - I‘ll see if I get weird looks if I say 😁 4y

This was a really heartwarming novel. Beginning in 1914, & spanning several decades, the story traces a German family who facing numerous adversities are forced to disperse. The one item that links them all is a beautifully crafted silver music box. While parts of the narrative come together to conveniently, I was still charmed. And I‘m eager to read the sequel, Dreams of Silver. #KindleUnlimited #PoP20 #GoldSilverOrBronzeInTitle

I enjoyed this book. The story is beautiful and touched on a few aspects about WWI and WWII that I didn't know about. This book with worth the read.

This book was SO GOOD! I could not put it down. It is a multi-generational story about a Jewish family in Germany around World War II. There are so many lives that cross in this book and they become separated for many reasons. They are connected by the silver music box Johann crafted for his son before he enlisted in the war. Years later, Lilian is given the music box and tries to figure out what it means. There will be a sequel later this year!

This was last month‘s Kindle First book and I couldn‘t put it down. It‘s a multi-generation story of a family that‘s separated by war. It was so good. This will fit your book in translation and translated by a woman prompts if you need those. #MountTBRChallenge #10

Day 29 #emojinov #💸 I have been trying to stick to my massive #TBR piles & library books and not purchase many books right now but I find my money flying away 💸when there are great e-book bargains & I bought these five over the past week. On the plus side, the tagged book was free through Kindle First on Amazon Prime & I had a $20-ish credit on my Amazon account so the
