Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11 (with audio recording) | Brian Floca
26 posts | 14 read | 6 to read
Brilliantly illustrated, Moonshot tells the story of our first visit to the moon in 1969an unforgettable story of home, seen whole, from far away. Simply told, grandly shown, here is the flight of Apollo 11. Here for a new generation of readers and explorers are the steady astronauts, clicking themselves into gloves and helmets, strapping themselves into sideways seats. Here are their great machines in all their detail and monumentality, the ROAR of rockets, and the silence of the Moon. Here is a story of adventure and discovery -- a story of leaving and returning during the summer of 1969, and a story of home, seen whole, from far away.

Moonshot by Brian Floca tells the truth tale of Apollo 11. This book is an amazing way to introduce young learners to this historic event. Young readers can see illustrations of scientist, preparing for the launch of Apollo 11 and can also read about the journey that they took. I would especially recommend this book to any teachers or parents of budding scientists.

Moonshot written and illustrated by Brian Floca is a super cute NF picture book for any student interested in space-which we know is a good chunk of students! Winner of the Caldecott medal, this book will take you on the journey of Apollo 11. Students can read all about the events that took place, and what it means to be an astronaut. #ucflae3414su20

ashleyshugars For this specific picture book, I would recommend using it as an IR, as it is very interest based, following UDL strategy 7.1. For EL students, try using a KWL strategy in conjunction with ESOL strategy 50. Try this resource for some different classroom incorporation ideas: https://www.readworks.org/lessons/grade2/moonshot-flight-apollo-11. (edited) 4y
JessicaO Hi, Ashley! Thank you for sharing this book. I am trying to expand my library that I and slowly growing with my non-fiction type books and this is a great choice. Your description makes it seem so interesting, and I know that students like seeing factual information in this way. I like that you said in your classroom resource description that this book is interest based! I will keep that in mind when implementing something like it in my class! 4y
DrSpalding Read works is another excellent resource! This could be used as reference material as an independent read but it could also support your space unit in science. The author/illustrator has won numerous awards. This would be a great book to add to your classroom library. 4y

Stunning in detail and scope - especially the illustrations. Text isn't less stunning or detailed, it's just a different style - poetic maybe? Read aloud, it's matter-of-fact but not dry. To quote the front flap, "Simply told, grandly shown..." Has the most informative endsheets I've every laid eyes on. My only critcism: I wish author included resources for futher reading or investigating. #dw2020reads #nonfiction #kidslit #readyoursign #cancer

Moonshot was written by Brian Floca and published in 2009. The book describes the flight of Apollo 11. This book is beneficial for students to hear because they would learn about a launch to the moon and the experiences that came with it. It has illustrations that better exemplify the text.

This non fiction book all about space and the moon was super fun to read! It tells a story of Neil Armstrong landing on the moon! The illustrations in this book are beautiful. There is a lot of use of the color black throughout the book. It is interesting and in the back has a more detailed explanation for those who want to know more.

Nonfiction. This is a great nonfiction book. It made even me, someone who has no interest in going to space, want to know what it‘s like to go to the moon. It‘s engaging and informational and perfect for a classroom.

Moonshot by Brian Floca, 2009. This book combines the features of a traditional nonfiction book with those of a children‘s book. It‘s full of information and diagrams like that in a nonfiction book but it‘s told in the style of a children‘s book with bright and engaging illustrations that are also like a children‘s book. It‘s beautifully done and very engaging.

This book is set up super cool! Some of the pages are set up like a comic book and the illustrations are very bright and detailed. This is a good way to introduce kids to the history of spaceships without using confusing terminology or images.

I thought that this NF picture was such a great book to have in a classroom library! Not only are the illustrations extremely inviting, the book itself has great information about Apollo 11. I thought this book could spark a great dramatic reading from students as they reenact the first moon landing, the rovers on mars and the moon, etc. Getting children interested in reading through space exploration might even be MORE fun for the teacher.

kennedimartin This link http://brianfloca.com/moonshot-classroom-resources.html to Brian Floca‘s website has great resources that can support teachers as they read this book with their class. ESOL 20 a teacher can make sure beginner EL‘s are learning the vocabulary that teachers are expecting all students to learn about this unit. UDL 2.1 and 2.2 can also support a teachers goal on vocab and content. #lae3414sp19 5y
DrSpalding What a wonderful book to share with students during a science lesson and honestly a history/social studies lesson. 5y

Moonshot: The Flight of the Apollo by Brian Floca (NF) would be a great book to do a Partner Reading (PR)with. Moonshot talks about everything that goes into shooting a rocket into space and what astronauts do in space. This book can be read during a Science unit about space or a History unit that is talking about the moon landing. After this book is read, a video of a rocket launch can be shown to the students to further show what happens.

Edenmonet The UDL principle would be (1.3), offer alternatives for visual information. The ESOL strategy used would be 4, link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge, as this book should be read with a history unit about the moon landing or science unit about space. A good lesson would be:https://www.rif.org/sites/default/files/Support_Materials/Moonshot-Educators.pdf #LAE3414SP19 5y
DrSpalding Partner reading yes and always think about utilizing this in your science content area. 5y

#MusicalNewYear Day 17: Sounds like #MyShot, Moonshot, as Fats noted in her review, “talks about the historic flight of Apollo 11, a one-week expedition to somewhere no one has been — the moon. The book relates the story of two spaceships, Columbia and Eagle, and the astronauts who braved going into the unknown.” Her full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-9d8

Moonshot is a picture book written and illustrated by Brian Floca. It is a NF and has won the Flora Stielglitz award. The book is about the Flight of Apollo 11, the adventure an discovery that this flight went through! It is a great book for storey telling, maybe before teaching a history lesson on Apollo 11, or space. ESOL:4 UDL:3.2 here are some lessons and activities on apollo 11: https://educators.brainpop.com/bp-topic/apollo-project/

DrSpalding Again, expand a bit on your strategies regarding the English learners and students with special needs that will be in your future classroom. This is a fascinating topic. Have you seen the movie? 6y
