Talking God
Talking God | Tony Hillerman
4 posts | 13 read
Reunited by a grave robber and a corpse, Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn is trying to determine the identity of a murder victim, while Officer Jim Chee is arresting Smithsonian conservator Henry Highhawk for ransacking the sacred bones of his ancestors. But with each peeled-back layer, it becomes shockingly clear that these two cases are mysteriously connectedand that others are pursuing Highhawk, with lethal intentions. And the search for answers to a deadly puzzle is pulling Leaphorn and Chee into the perilous arena of superstition, ancient ceremony, and living gods.

This one was slightly less believable than the others (international terrorists and both Leaphorn and Chee end up in DC separately??) but still a good read. I appreciated that Hillerman presented different sides of the “we have literal Native American skeletons in storage at the Smithsonian, is that okay“ debate without it feeling polemic.

Side note - I have read 15 books for #BookSpinBingo and still no bingo 😂 WHY

TheSpineView Great job! 2y

BookNAround LOL! I feel your bookspin bingo problem. I‘ve read 11 from my board (and quite a few not on there since I ran out of free spaces to count them as) and I don‘t have a bingo yet either. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @BookNAround - I just don't understand how I can do this every month LOL The one I'm reading now is at least the center space so even though it STILL will not give me a bingo, I think it will finally set me up for some success before the end of the month!!! 2y
BookNAround @TheAromaofBooks It‘s my specialty too, as well as turning my bookspin and doublespin books into “the books which must not be read.” 😂 2y
Crazeedi That has happened to me before!! 2y

“I heard he was a real pragmatist. Not a traditional Navajo.” And how about you, Janet Pete? Chee thought. How traditional are you? Do you believe in what Changing Woman taught our #ancestors about the power we are given to heal ourselves? How about you leaving Dinetah and the Sacred Mountains because a white man wants you to keep him happy in Washington? But that was none of his goddamn business.

I'm reading *even more than usual* to distract myself this week—I'm in too much physical pain to be confident enough to formulate a review. This is a re-read for me. Was a big fan of this series back in the day, and I enjoy his daughter's continuation of the series (with Manuelito as the main character).

BookwormM Hope your pain is under control soon 5y
JoyBlue @BookwormM Thank you! I just took my 1st muscle relaxant, so hopefully I‘ll sleep tonight. Doc also prescribed some PT. I‘ll try to set that up to start early next week. 5y
