The Anatomy of Dreams
The Anatomy of Dreams: A Novel | Chloe Benjamin
Winner of the Edna Ferber Prize Long-listed for the 2014 Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize A sly, promising and ambitious debut. Publishers Weekly Chloe Benjamin is a great new talent. Lorrie Moore, author of Bark: Stories Its 1998, and Sylvie Patterson, a bookish student at a Northern California boarding school, falls in love with a spirited, elusive classmate named Gabe. Their headmaster, Dr. Adrian Keller, is a charismatic medical researcher who has staked his career on the therapeutic potential of lucid dreaming: By teaching his patients to become conscious during sleep, he helps them to relieve stress and heal from trauma. Over the next six years, Sylvie and Gabe become consumed by Kellers work, following him from the redwood forests of Eureka, California, to the enchanting New England coast. But when an opportunity brings the trio to the Midwest, Sylvie and Gabe stumble into a tangled relationship with their mysterious neighborsand Sylvie begins to doubt the ethics of Kellers research, recognizing the harm that can be wrought under the guise of progress. As she navigates the hazy, permeable boundaries between what is real and what isnt, who can be trusted and who cannot, Sylvie also faces surprising developments in herself: an unexpected infatuation, growing paranoia, and a new sense of rebellion. In stirring, elegant prose, Benjamins tale exposes the slippery nature of trustand the immense power of our dreams.

I liked this book! I liked the factor of the night and the stars and moon. I liked all the talking about dreaming, lucid or not. I really liked the initial research of Keller, about the multiverse happening in your subconciousness. I also enjoyed the writing style and the switching between moments in time.

I think I would want to read it all again eventually, knowing what I know now, to see all the signs and the foreshadowing.

A quiet gem of a book with some of the loveliest writing. It‘s a slow unravel, and I kinda figured out the end early on, but I still enjoyed the journey. I didn‘t like it as much as The Immortalists, but I‘m glad to have picked it up.

First book down for #24in48

4 star read for me involving a boarding school (though not all of it is set at the school), an obsessive relationship, a mentor with a magnetic pull and dream experiments that may not be that ethical. Highly recommend to anyone who likes the weird and wonderful.

My first book for #24in48 #teamausnz
So far I have read for 2h 38mins and it is now 3am.
I‘m going to go to sleep and dive right back in when I wake up.
So far I‘m really enjoying the foreshadowing aspect which is something that is a hit or miss with me. It has a strange boarding school, experiment vibe and I‘m starting to think that the whole thing is a one big experiment but I could be getting ahead of myself

Trashcanman Where do you live if you don't mind me asking? 5y

New day, new week, new book. The Immortalists is my favorite book of 2018 (so far), so I had to make time for Chloe Benjamin's first novel #FirstNovelPrize

peaKnit I just finished it, much deeper than I expected. 👍🏻 6y
peaKnit Yes. Immortalists got so much hype and she lives local to me so I got that the day it came out, enjoyed it and have been waiting ages for this one from the library. You?? 6y

The Anatomy of Dreams is a character study of Sylvia as she meets Gabe in high school and ultimately joins him in researching sleep disorders. It explores themes of relationships, consciousness, and betrayal. It starts strong and has places of strength throughout but bogs down too much to call a pick. I think her strength is in shorter pieces as in her current book.

#marchmadnesschallenge (swap in for The Immortalists)

Cinfhen Thanks for your review!! I‘m willing to forgo this one 6y

Did you all know The Immortalists by @chloekbenjamin is set to debut at #7 on the NYT bestsellers list? And did you know she previously published another book? I picked up my copy of The Anatomy of Dreams at her reading at @powellsbooks last week and I can't wait to dive in! As a scientist, the premise intrigues me.

I liked the writing, and the setups were intriguing, but the follow-through was kinda dull.
