I read this several months ago and was unimpressed at the time. The essays had all been published previously and I thought it was just a way to fulfill a book contract. However, there‘s one essay that I have thought about quite often in which Chabon instructs his teenage son on how “not to be a dick” to girls/women. I love that Chabon did that and I wish more dads (and moms) would do the same.

This is Michael Chabon describing as a child going to work with his dad who was a doctor. My dad used to take me to work with him. He was a door-to-door salesmen so I‘d ride around in the car with him on days I didn‘t have school. His customers would come out to the car to meet me. Those were the good old days, indeed!

Essays by Chabon about his kids. I had read some before, but it was charming and reflective.

I‘m happiest with non-fiction, particularly essays and memoirs. I‘m not sure why. I used to love fiction, but not so much anymore. I like and appreciate the honesty in these essays about fatherhood. Chabon isn‘t afraid to be self reflexive and self critical and that makes his love for his children and his desire to be a good father shine even brighter.

My to-be-read pile is a little out of control.

Read this on Thursday afternoons while my son is having swim lessons at the local hot springs. The water is warm, the shade is cool, and the sound of children splashing and laughing fills the air. Long been a fan of Chabon, and this recent little essay collection is a quick treat.

I just love Michael Chabon—I‘ve devoured all of his fiction—and this small, lovely collection of meditations on fatherhood reinforced my feelings. I listened to this one, which Chabon read himself, and I highly recommend the #audiobook!

Slight but full of heartfelt observations about fatherhood.
