A teen rockstar has to navigate family, love, coming out, and life in the spotlight after being labeled the latest celebrity trainwreck in Jen Wilde's quirky and utterly relatable novel. As a rock star drummer in the hit band The Brightsiders, Emmy Kings life should be perfect. But theres nothing the paparazzi love more than watching a celebrity crash and burn. When a night of partying lands Emmy in hospital and her girlfriend in jail, shes branded the latest tabloid train wreck. Luckily, Emmy has her friends and bandmates, including the super-swoonworthy Alfie, to help her pick up the pieces of her life. She knows hooking up with a band member is exactly the kind of trouble she should be avoiding, and yet Emmy and Alfie Just. Keep. Kissing. Will the inevitable fallout turn her into a clickbait scandal (again)? Or will she find the strength to stand on her own? Jen Wilde, author of Queens of Geek, which Seventeen called, the geeky, queer book of our dreams is back with a brand new cast of highly diverse and relatable characters for her fans to fall in love with. Praise for Queens of Geek: "Seeing girls and women uplifting, protecting, and loving each other is extremely powerful, especially in the context of fandom. The book deals head on with issues of mental health, body shaming, sexuality, and internet celebrity, handling them with a delicate and skillful touch." Teen Vogue "Jen Wilde's book about two best friendsone a bisexual young woman of color, the other a young [autistic] woman . . . dealing with anxietywill be a favorite of anyone who is a fan of geek culture. . . . This fun book about fierce friendships gives voice to a group of diverse female characters who are so defined by so much more than just their mental health and sexuality." Bustle "The characters diversity provides natural opportunities to explore a number of contemporary teen issues, including race, sexual orientation, feminism, and body image. Some of the most compelling chapters are told from the point of view of Taylor, who fears change, hates crowds, and is on the autism spectrum. . . . Part of Macmillans crowdsourced imprint, this celebration of geek culture and fandom promotes diversity and being true to oneself." School Library Journal

Some books just feel, I dno, kinda relatable? But it also read a bit young, and a lot of the time I just wanted to grab the protagonist and shake her. I had a hard time sticking with it, and after a few tries, I‘m letting this one go. It‘s def not horrible tho, it was pretty contemporary and prob good for teen readers

I'm not the target audience, though I read a fair amount of YA. This didn't float my boat at all. The best part for me was Emmy's colorful hair.

I was 25% of the way through this book before I really started to connect to any of the characters, but all the characters, especially Emmy, grow and change a lot, and that‘s when they really started to come alive for me. I ended up being completely charmed by this story. :-) Another great read for Pride month! 🏳️‍🌈🌈

For today I needed a book with music as a main plot point. I love music and I love books, so this was two of my favorite things. I also love the usual friends, family, health and all of that. This was a good book, but a bit slow at points. #MusicalNewYear @Cinfhen @vivastory

To start off today‘s #BookMail I‘m going with #TheYAChronicles June box.The theme was Turn Up The Music & they didn‘t disappoint. There was a music note scarf,2 bookmarks with instruments on them, a Jem candle from Kool&Co(smells divine!)and this so cute wood music box that plays the Harry Potter theme! The book is a contemporary YA about Emmy King, the drummer of the band The Brightsiders who ends up in hospital after her life comes crashing down.

Lizpixie Oh, it‘s a #Pride🌈book too, Emmy is the “b” on the lgbtq+ *trigger warning* there is DV in this as well. 6y

Pros:
-Diverse cast of characters at various places on the gender/sexuality spectrums
-Full of loving friendships(and silliness. FRIGHTSIDERS!)
-Queens of Geek cameos
Cons:
-Could have used a little more editing love. Many of the conflicts could use a little more development either for character consistency or to really hit an important point (discussion of alcohol abuse and emotional abuse)
Overall, I still had fun and will pick up her next book!
