Through visiting passages of The Great Gatsby at various stages of edit (inc. the back-and-forth between Fitzgerald and his editor), and through accounts of editing processes from other known authors, the moral is that there are many ways to self-edit; authors can use this book to shop for the one(s) best suited to them. Bell also breaks down macro- and micro-editing concerns. I caution taking her advice in the language subset too much to heart.
