Scones and Scoundrels: The Highland Bookshop Mystery Series: Book 2 | Molly MacRae
23 posts | 13 read | 23 to read
Daphne did her Inversgail homework and knows that Janet and her partners solved a previous murder. She tries to persuade them to join her in uncovering the killer and the truth. To prove she's capable, she starts poking and prying. But investigating crimes can be murder, and Daphne ends up dead, poisoned by scones from the tearoom at Yon Bonnie Books. Now, to save the reputation of their business--not to mention the reputation of their scones--Janet and her partners must solve both murders. And Daphne's dog might be able to help them, if only they can get it to stop howling. . .

Listening to this as my night book. Oh, my goodness! One of the characters just said, “Lord love a duck.” I haven‘t heard that since my mother died 35 years ago. 😊❤️

Tamra My mom & her sister often used it! 😄 3y
KathyWheeler @Tamra my mom is the only person, besides my aunts, that I‘ve ever heard say it. She was from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. (edited) 3y

Good morning, littens. Happy Labor Day in the US and Canada! I‘ve got reading and tennis on the agenda today.

I enjoyed this cozy mystery series very much, and the second installment was even better than the first. The dialogue is especially witty and moves the plot along. And the characters are terrific, including a recurring character, a famous crime writer. Another square crossed off on #bookspinbingo and a fine #cyoreadathon accomplishment!

MittenGirlPeach Watching tennis, to be exact. 😉 4y
Sace Oh I never would have confessed to just watching. I would have been "Oh yes, I play very well!" ? 4y
MittenGirlPeach @Sace that cracks me up! I‘m an avid tennis fan, but haven‘t played in years, so I figured it would be best to be honest! 4y

Since I have the second book in this series on hand, I decided to dive in while all the characters are clear in my head. Really enjoying this one, even more than the first book. Relaxing with a book and a beer on this Saturday evening. It was in the 70s here today, though next week the temps will drop back closer to normal. But we made it to May. Exhale.

Set in Scotland and revolving around a bookstore? Sold! I finished this book yesterday and found it to be an enjoyable and entertaining read. I read the first book in the series via audio and I think I enjoyed that format more than reading the physical book. Much of that had to do with the fact that I‘m not Scottish and I loved listening to the proper pronunciation of local lingo! 3/5⭐️

Texreader Audio version does sound marvelous! 5y
PurpleyPumpkin @Texreader It really was! I highly recommend. 😉 5y

After adjusting to the new narrator (she did a great job; I highly recommend these on audio!), I thoroughly enjoyed this!

I love the setting, the characters, and Ms. Macrae‘s delightful way with words. I listened to it twice, as I adored hanging out in Inversgail and wasn‘t ready to leave!

I find it especially gratifying that I have augmented my vocabulary with words like “numpty” “pernickety” and “bampot.” Anxiously awaiting book 3!

Crazeedi I love the words! I love using unusual ones...these are terrific 6y
mabell @Crazeedi There were many more! Such a fun book. 😄 6y

I moved right on to listening to Book 2 in the series, and the narrator is different than one who read the first book. I‘m sure I will get used to it, but it is initially discordant. Almost like I have to re-meet all the characters. Sigh.

sprainedbrain Oh, I hate it when that happens. 6y
mabell @sprainedbrain I know! Especially when I just listened to the first book the day before. The good news is listening to both back to back, I‘m now hearing my own interior monologue with a Scottish accent. 😂 6y
sprainedbrain @mabell I believe I need to listen to these books, just for that experience. 😂 6y

Meet Peregrin Took aka Pippin! We finally got to bring him home today from the humane society. We lost our last kitty a few months ago and Pippin needed some medical care before we brought him home.

So glad to have a kitty again!

Starting book 2, little disappointed that the reader is different. I have to get used to new voices for characters.

umbrellagirl Did you read the first one in the highland bookshop series? It‘s on my TBR and this one sounds good too. 7y
scripturient @umbrellagirl Yes, I really liked the first one and it was hard waiting for the second instalment. :) 7y

Book 2 in this new series, I felt it was stronger overall. I had a hard time with the first one and keeping the characters straight. Scones had an interesting murder plot, more layers to it, and was just tighter. I have a feeling that these will continue to have that "it takes a village" concept to the solving of the murders, something akin to the Hannah Swenson books but not as frothy. The Scottish setting is definitely a plus!

A solid second book to the series, I actually liked it better than the first. An easy breezy cozy mystery that you can sit back an enjoy. I hope there's a book 3.

Bailedbailed

I bailed on this after 60 or so pages. I had mostly liked some of the characters in the first one but I actively disliked two of them in this one and the other two were just meh. The secondary characters were even worse. This #cozymystery just wasn't for me.

My library hold came in! I'm giving this second book in the #cozymystery series a chance. I gave the first one a Pick for setting and because I thought the series had potential but there were definitely things I didn't care for that I hope are absent from this one.

Cinfhen Good luck 💚 7y

What a fun book! I loved the setting and thought the mystery was cute. I had the same problem that I had with book one, in that I couldn‘t remember anything specific about the main characters. But the setting is enjoyable and I‘ll definitely be reading more of the series once it‘s released! I voluntarily reviewed an eARC copy of the book from the publisher via NetGalley.
