The Job of the Wasp
The Job of the Wasp: A Novel | Colin Winnette
16 posts | 18 read | 18 to read
A witty and grisly gothic unlike anything Ive ever read. You should absolutely read this. Kelly Link, author of Get in Trouble A new arrival at an isolated school for orphaned boys quickly comes to realize there is something wrong with his new home. He hears chilling whispers in the night, his troubled classmates are violent and hostile, and the Headmaster sends cryptic messages, begging his new charge to confess. As the new boy learns to survive on the edges of this impolite society, he starts to unravel a mystery at the school's dark heart. And that's when the corpses start turning up. A coming-of-age tale, a Gothic ghost story, and a murder mystery all in one, The Job of the Wasp is a bloodcurdling and brilliantly subversive novel about paranoia, love, and the nightmare of adolescence.

A new (and somehow fitting) bookmark for my new book. So far I can't tell if the book is poorly written or just weird. I enjoy weird and am pulling for that. The narrator feels unreliable, but definitely not in a Gone Girl kind of way and I think it's weirding me out a bit.

A stylised, surreal and gothic ghost story set in a “temporary holding facility with mandatory educational elements” for orphaned boys. Lord of the Flies x The Turn of the Screw x um, Scooby Doo? It didn‘t entirely work for me, but hurrah for a commitment to the weird!

⭐️⭐️⭐️ The whole time I was reading I was thinking I didn‘t like it. I kept reading hoping it would improve; I can not decide if it improved or if I liked it. The whole time I was reading I was thinking how loose & random the plot was. I kept reading hoping it would firm up. I can‘t decide if it did. Strangely, I want to read it again, knowing now how it ends & see if I feel differently about it the 2nd time around.

Soooo close to a pick but constant internal rhapsodizing and a really abrupt ambiguous ending overcame the really well done gothic atmosphere. It felt like trying to make out objects through muddied, obscured waters which worked for me but too many long passages of inner dialogue made the mood too distant rather than adding to it. Man this is a ride. I was not enjoying it at first, it was too clinical and oddly confusing for all that all of the events taking place were clearly laid out. All still true but I'm more hooked now 2/3 in of this short horror novel.

1. Nope 😝

2. 32 F

3. Just finished The 100 Homecoming, literally five minutes ago. Next up is The Job of The Wasp.

4. A tour across the United Kingdom stopping at all of the monolithic sites.

5. Will do!

I‘m actually lying in bed today/tonight, really ill, with the bug that did the rounds on my son and my ‘other half‘; Roman had two days off school, got to watch TV all day today, and the man-child was on death‘s door with a vile cough. Now I have it and I have a head that‘s about to BLOW, and my usual MS aches and pains are 10X the strength to where I can hardly move. I got left to my own devices but luckily got to stare at my #bookmail / swaps 💓

A very quick, haunted school type story with a bunch of murders. It does get a little strange at the end as the mystery begins to unravel. A good creepy factor too, but not too much.

Imagine Lord of Flies if it were a surreal, gothic ghost story written by Jesse Ball. That's the best way I can describe this bizarre little book. Although I wanted more cohesion from the narrative, I'm always grateful for the opportunity to read a novel like this that's so intelligent and peculiar. If you like Ball, Helen Phillips and Samanta Schweblin, you'll probably like this. Just be prepared to come away from it with a lot of questions.

I had so many plans to be productive on this sunny Saturday.. when I picked up this book, I knew within 5 minutes that my day would be spent reading. This was an outstanding book. Reminiscent of Shirley Jackson ( one of my favorite authors) this book was a grim, gothic compelling journey into the subconscious. Story as allegory? Or just a twisted tale? I loved it either way. 5/5!!

Natasha.C.Barnes Why am I SO creeped out by this cover? 6y
Caksf @Natasha.C.Barnes -lol! The cover is pretty creepy, but then so is the book! If you liked “We Have Always Lived in the Castle” or any of Poe‘s short stories.. I‘d recommend it.. despite the creepy cover! 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @Caksf Yes, that does sound up my alley...🤔 6y
Caksf @natasha.c.barnes Enjoy! I‘ll be interested to read your review and see what your take is! 6y

Revisiting this little stinger today for work purposes. Please take a moment to appreciate how they described it in the upper right corner using lyrics from from ‘Werewolf Bar Mitzvah‘. 🐝 🖤 📖

emtobiasz I made a Halloween display at the library with bookmarks in the books that said "Spooky Scary"... I think all of us staff walked around with the song stuck in our heads all month ? 6y
Howardsimmons That has to be one of the grossest book covers I‘ve ever seen. 6y

New Year‘s greetings from me, my cat, and The Job of the Wasp! Two of my 2018 resolutions are to read 150 books and to stay on top of Indie Next picks to better handsell to Curious Iguana‘s customers. The Job of the Wasp is a January Indie Next pick, and it‘s spooky and fun so far.
