Shadows | Robin McKinley

A compelling and inventive novel set in a world where science and magic are at odds, by Robin McKinley, the Newbery-winning author of The Hero and the Crown and The Blue Sword, as well as the classic fantasy titles Beauty, Chalice, Spindles End, Pegasus and Sunshine Maggie knows somethings off about Val, her moms new husband. Val is from Oldworld, where they still use magic, and he wont have any tech in his office-shed behind the house. Butmore importantlywhat are the huge, horrible, jagged, jumpy shadows following him around? Magic is illegal in Newworld, which is all about science. The magic-carrying gene was disabled two generations ago, back when Maggies great-grandmother was a notable magician. But that was a long time ago. Then Maggie meets Casimir, the most beautiful boy she has ever seen. Hes from Oldworld tooand hes heard of Maggies stepfather, and has a guess about Vals shadows. Maggie doesnt want to know . . . until earth-shattering events force her to depend on Val and his shadows. And perhaps on her own heritage. In this dangerously unstable world, neither science nor magic has the necessary answers, but a truce between them is impossible. And although the two are supposed to be incompatible, Maggies discovering the world will need both to survive. A delightful read. Publishers Weekly Bound to appeal. Kirkus Reviews

rockpools That Anne cover is SO pretty! 5y
TheAromaofBooks @RachelO - Right?? I bought it just for that... I may already own several copies 😬 My only disappointment is that that's just the jacket cover - the actual hardcover is solid green. 5y

Perhaps a little too on the nose for today's #shadows prompt?! It's the first thing I thought of, though! This was one of my favorite reads last year. It‘s set in a world where magic has been outlawed in favor of science, but of course, science can‘t offer all the solutions to the escalating dangers that occur. It took me a little while to orient myself in the world, but once I settled in, it was hard to put down. I want a sequel! #feistyfeb

What could go better with coffee and a turkey sandwich for lunch than a little #FiestyFeb photo challenge on the side?

I've had this in my TBR for a while, I think I need to try and fit it in sometime soon! I love a good Robin McKinley book, and I'm shocked I still haven't read this one!

#Bestof2016, YA edition! Saffy's Angel is included to represent the whole series, which I fell in love with over the summer. Shadows was a spontaneous library pick (because I can't check out just one!) that turned out to be amazing. The Thief is one that a friend has recommended to me over and over, and now I can't wait to finish the series. And Aristotle and Dante is a #blamelitsy read. 😊#seasonsreadings2016

brandymuses I love the Casson Family series too! 8y
BarbaraJean @brandymuses Aren't they wonderful?! I have new favorite comfort books now that I've read these! 8y

A good book and a pile of new seed catalogs-I can't choose!!!!!

SusanInTiburon Ooo, seed catalogs!❤️ 8y
lilredhen @SusanInTiburon I have five right now, I'll probably get at least two more. The harder thing is finding helping hands for my front beds, places I want to put side beds, back plantings, and edibles garden. A big yard is nice, but gardening solo in a big yard makes me feel like Sisyphus lol 8y
charl08 Good luck with your garden. I can't wait for spring so I can get started. 8y
lilredhen @charl08 the weather is all mixed up here, so it feels like spring at the moment. It's making me crazy lol 8y

June reading! My total for the month rocketed up... shocking how the lack of papers to grade affected my reading total. 😄 Also up: my library usage. In spite of my 300-book TBR pile... somebody stop me from making library hold requests!!

Pickpick

Soooo good. It took me a little while to orient myself in the world, but once I settled in, it was hard to put down. It felt a bit like Sunshine... and I definitely finished it wanting more. Dangit, Robin McKinley. Sequel this. (And Sunshine, while you're at it.)
