Trans Britain
Trans Britain: Our Journey from the Shadows | Christine Burns
8 posts | 2 read | 8 to read
Over the last five years, transgender people have seemed to burst into the public eye: Time declared 2014 a trans tipping point, while American Vogue named 2015 the year of trans visibility. From our television screens to the ballot box, transgender people have suddenly become part of the zeitgeist. This apparently overnight emergence, though, is just the latest stage in a long and varied history. The renown of Paris Lees and Hari Nef has its roots in the efforts of those who struggled for equality before them, but were met with indifference and often outright hostility from mainstream society. Trans Britain chronicles this journey in the words of those who were there to witness a marginalised community grow into the visible phenomenon we recognise today: activists, film-makers, broadcasters, parents, an actress, a rock musician and a priest, among many others. Here is everything you always wanted to know about the background of the trans community, but never knew how to ask.

If trans people in Britain were some sort of
'overnight phenomenon' then it was a long night, lasting generations. A fad would have disappeared by now; fads have a short half-life in our novelty-obsessed media.

Bookwomble This is such an informative book. Fascinating to learn of the past relative acceptance of gender diversity and that the current "moral panic" about gender diversity is recent and politically motivated. 2y
Cazxxx @Bookwomble I‘ve only just started it but looking forward to learning some more of the history 2y
Bookwomble @Cazxxx Oops, sorry - spoilers! 😬 2y
Cazxxx @Bookwomble Ha it‘s ok, not telling me anything I didn‘t already know 😂 2y

Trans people have always been part of the diverse group of beings we call human. In many cultures across time and space, trans people have not only been accepted, their existence has rightly been taken for granted. More recently, they have often been forced into hiding, been forced to deny who they are, even denied the cultural knowledge that they can exist. Trans people shouldn't have to fight to be accepted, they are born with the right to exist

AmyG I wish for a world when people are jusged by what‘s in their heart. 6y
Bookwomble @AmyG Me, too. So we're making it happen, bit by bit. Yay us! 😁👏 6y

I've learned so much from this book about the historical context of trans experience and identity, how it has been both separate from and linked with LGB identities, and the more recent recognition of non-binary identities. The growing mainstream recognition that trans-ness is not a pathology, rather a valid expression of personhood, is a significant change in social attitudes that I'm sure the present conservative backlash will not stem. 5🌟

TrishB Great review 👍🏻 6y
Bookwomble @TrishB Thanks ? By fortuitous coincidence, I switched onto Radio 4 just as a 15 minute interview started with a trans woman. I feared initially it was going to be a story of "trans regret", but it wasn't. Definitely worth a listen of you can get the BBC iPlayer Why I Changed My Mind - Series 4, Samantha Kane - @bbcradio4 http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0bclbmv 6y
TrishB Thanks - I shall play as soon as I find my headphones!! 6y

Trashcanman @Bookwomble you live in England? 6y
Bookwomble @arlenefinnigan Yes, very good: informative and assertive without being preachy and combative. 6y
Bookwomble @Trashcanman Not only in England, but the best bit: The North! 6y
Trashcanman @Bookwomble well I did not know that. 👁️👁️ That's cool I've always wanted to visit there. 6y
Bookwomble @Trashcanman I hope you get the chance. You've already got friends over here 😊 Disregarding my flippant regionalism, London and the south have much to commend them. I lived down there for 18 happy years, but the North is my homeland and I'm more than happy to be back here. 6y
