A Study in Honor
A Study in Honor: A Novel | Claire O'Dell
26 posts | 19 read | 19 to read
Set in a near future Washington, D.C., a clever, incisive, and fresh feminist twist on a classic literary iconSherlock Holmesin which Dr. Janet Watson and covert agent Sara Holmes will use espionage, advanced technology, and the power of deduction to unmask a murderer targeting Civil War veterans. Dr. Janet Watson knows firsthand the horrifying cost of a divided nation. While treating broken soldiers on the battlefields of the New Civil War, a snipers bullet shattered her arm and ended her career. Honorably discharged and struggling with the semi-functional mechanical arm that replaced the limb she lost, she returns to the nations capital, a bleak, edgy city in the throes of a fraught presidential election. Homeless and jobless, Watson is uncertain of the future when she meets another black LGBTQA woman, Sara Holmes, a mysterious yet playfully challenging covert agent who offers the doctor a place to stay. Watsons readjustment to civilian life is complicated by the infuriating antics of her strange new roommate. But the tensions between them dissolve when Watson discovers that soldiers from the New Civil War have begun dying one by oneand that the deaths may be the tip of something far more dangerous, involving the pharmaceutical industry and even the looming election. Joining forces, Watson and Holmes embark on a thrilling investigation to solve the mysteryand secure justice for these fallen soldiers.

A retelling of S. Holmes & Dr. Watson in an alternate reality/near future setting where the protagonists are two black women in the WA DC area. Gritty and dark, with a close look at what returning soldiers of war endure when they don't fit into society (PTSD, disability, etc). The characters are intriguing while the story is kind of clunky at times, like it needed another round of edits. Still, I liked this a lot and looking forward to the next.

I didn't really enjoy this, but that's more a reflection on the fact that political thrillers aren't really my genre than on the writing. I also found the twisty plot hard to follow on audio, it would probably have been better to read it in print. It's well written, and it's an interesting speculation on what a post-Trump New Confederacy dystopia would have been like.

I want to like this book — I love the world O‘Dell has created with Watson and Holmes as black and queer women and an America during a 2nd Civil War— but I‘m getting bogged down in Watson‘s day. I understand specificity helps make fictional worlds feel real, but O‘Dell is too specific. I feel like I‘m experiencing every second of Watson‘s day. It‘s too much and too boring. Now that we‘ve finally met Holmes, I hope the story picks up. #audiowalk

A black lesbian retelling of Sherlock Holmes and Watson? It worked. Holmes was harder to get to know, but I liked Watson‘s character from the first line. O‘Dell created an original world while staying true to the spirit of the Holmes canon. Looking forward to the next book.

I‘m a huge fan of the Sherlock movies and TV show but I have never read the original source material. I found this Sherlock and Holmes reimagining interesting in some areas and flat in others. I think the author captured Watson well but I just wasn‘t sold on her version Holmes. The mystery doesn‘t really start until about 100+ pages but overall I enjoyed the concept and will read the next book in the series.

Slow but interesting and the fact that it‘s set in a future based on worse case scenario of current events makes for an unsettling read.

Reggie When I read the passage and then what you had to say I looked up at the title and for a minute I thought it said A Study in Horror. Which I feel would still be applicable. Lol 5y
Liatrek @Reggie Lol! It would totally fit this book 🤣 5y

While reading I was getting this vibe of malaise from it. As a Holmes remix it checks a lot of boxes. O'Dell writes a Watson that I could see as a black veteran army doctor woman. Janet has a "life" as a character beyond the Watson boxes. That's about all I liked in this remix.

Holmes is so problematic. This character checked all the Holmes boxes, sure, in a terrible way. It's sad because I had really hoped to get an amazing remix out of it.

A rare night where I will watch my home team and later the team I love. So it's Carter Hart's first game in Montreal and later it's Pens in Vegas with 🌸 #readingandwatchinghockey on a really, really arctic night outside.

writerlibrarian It's so so weird to cheer and laugh as 🌸 steals goals from Sid. Book is done and meh... Phil 🚨 1-0 🐧 Vegas ties on PP. 2 break away later 3-1 Vegas. Well... 🐧 came back in the 2nd with a goal and... finally Sid scored on 🌸 they are tied at 3. (edited) 6y

Set in the near future after a New Civil War in America (with everything wrong in irl newsfeed now, still going strong), this is a queer women homage to Holmes and Watson. There was a Japanese Hulu series recently with women Holmes and Watson (Miss Sherlock)so maybe a trend? I think it could have riffed more on the Sherlockian elements, but would be definitely up for the next one!

A Study in Honor by Claire O'Dell aka Beth Bernobich is on sale today. It's a dystopian queer women Holmes remix. I had it bookmarked to get when it was affordable. The reviews are split on it. I'll see I guess.

Didn't always work for me, but I found it an entertaining read. More homage to than retelling of Sherlock Holmes.

Another of those where I picked it up to try a couple pages and didn't put it down for 100+ pages. Not sure what I think of the Holmes retelling aspect -- I feel like it could be stronger without leaning on that context, which is not really the same story beyond some of the characters' traits. Enjoying it, though.

PickwickPlockPlock I've been thinking about buying it, mainly for the Holmes connection. 6y
