Underground Abductor: An Abolitionist Tale about Harriet Tubman
Underground Abductor: An Abolitionist Tale about Harriet Tubman | Nathan Hale
11 posts | 9 read | 4 to read
New York Times Bestseller Araminta Ross was born a slave in Delaware in the early 19th century. Slavery meant that her family could be ripped apart at any time, and that she could be put to work in dangerous places and for abusive people. But north of the Mason-Dixon line, slavery was illegal. If she could run away and make it north without being caught or killed, she'd be free. Facing enormous danger, Araminta made it, and once free, she changed her name to Harriet Tubman. Tubman spent the rest of her life helping slaves run away like she did, every time taking her life in her hands. Nathan Hale tells her incredible true-life story with the humor and sensitivity he's shown in every one of the Hazardous Tales--perfect for reluctant readers and classroom discussions. Get The Underground Abductor and two other Hazardous Tales in the Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales 3-Book Boxed Set, available now!

Middle-grade graphic biography of Harriet Tubman. I learned a lot about Tubman's history, but the style is a little too irreverent for my taste. My 11yo loved the book, and it has prompted lots of conversations, but he's a little more accustomed to the graphic format than I am.

From the Build Your Library homeschool curriculum level 6 booklist.

This Hazardous Tales graphic novel is about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. Its quite moving and she is fantastic. Also was I the only one who didn't know she had narcolepsy? This also may be the only one of these stories with a well deserved happy ending. Kleenex is still recommended while reading 😻

AlaMich The narcolepsy is actually something that stuck with me from elementary school about her. I remember thinking how dangerous it must have been, falling asleep at the drop of a hat like that. 4y
mrp27 I didn't know that either until I read this. Love these Hazardous Tales. (edited) 4y

Nathan Hale‘s Hazardous Tales are great introductions to history for kids. In an engaging format, the story of Harriet Tubman came to life on the page. I recommend these for classroom libraries.

This series is great and led to a lot of discussion about U.S. history and slavery. Felt very comprehensive for a graphic novel and I learned a lot about Harriet Tubman that I either never knew or had forgotten - Particularly about her role as a spy and leading raids during the civil war. Does not shy away from the cruelty and brutality of slavery and owners of enslaved persons, but does so in an age appropriate manner.

Another spectacular edition of American history! Harriet Tubman is one amazing woman and I was completely impressed with her life and what she risked over and over again in the pursuit of justice and freedom!!!

The humor in these books is so perfect, it breaks up the real serious bits extraordinarily well! The Hangman is my favorite!!!

Trying to get these finished because I went a little nuts at the library last time we were there... 😬 Now I'm overwhelmed!! Lol... getting some reading time in before heading in to the museum today, which has become more of a chore than enjoyment due to a new director and lots of changes that are affecting the way we give tours. 😤 Just a few more weeks!

Not gonna lie, I needed to take a break from this just now. This is going to take me a while to get through and I love that such a sensitive and difficult subject was brought to kids with amazing compassion.

What is a abolitionist? Seriously I don‘t know. Please put your answer in the comments.

TracyReadsBooks In this case, an abolitionist was someone who fought to end slavery. 6y

Harriet Tubman was seriously such a badass! I learned a lot from this graphic novel and the little quips and commentary helped to keep it from getting too grim. Read it in one sitting. Really enjoyed it and will totally be reading more from this dude!
