Newbery Honor-winning and #1 New York Times bestselling author Carl Hiaasen--beloved for his modern classics like Hoot and Chomp--delivers a wildly entertaining novel involving snakes, grizzlies, a missing dad, a menacing drone, and more! Some facts about Billy Dickens: * He once saw a biker swerve across the road in order to run over a snake. * Later, that motorcycle somehow ended up at the bottom of a canal. * Billy isn't the type to let things go. Some facts about Billy's family: * They've lived in six different Florida towns because Billy's mom always insists on getting a house near a bald eagle nest. * Billy's older sister is dating a jerk. It's a mystery. * Billy's dad left when he was four, and Billy knows almost nothing about him. * Billy has just found his dad's address--in Montana. This summer, Billy will fly across the country, hike a mountain, float a river, dodge a grizzly bear, shoot down a spy drone, save a neighbor's cat, save an endangered panther, and then try to save his own father. Carl Hiaasen tells a wickedly funny story about knowing when (and when not) to let things go.

Generally fun little YA book that was a decent listen while walking the dog.

Book 115 - audio

14 year old Billy has an absentee father and an unstable mother. Mom has to live within 15 min of an active bald eagle nest so is constantly moving the kids. Billy figures out his dad's address and gets a plane ticket to find him. Dad is a vigilante who goes after poachers with a drone.

All the adults are inept, the entire plot seemed like a stretch, and I don't even think my kids would like it.

Pickpick

Another Carl Hiaasen hit about Florida wildlife only this one also mixes in Montana ecology too. I‘m 65 years old and I‘ve learned so much about nature from these middle-grade books. Fantastic!

4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Well, he has done it again. Carl Hiaasen has written a book that kids will find hard to put down once they start. This adventure is going to see Billy and his step sister, Summer Chasing-Hawks, watching out for grizzly bears in Montana, and and panthers in Florida. I think part of it was the back and forth between Montana and Florida. Overall, this book is a great adventure. Readers young and old will fall in love with Billy and Summer.

I'm half way done with #booked2018 challenge. I'm not reading in the months I should but I am reading. @BarbaraTheBibliophage

BarbaraTheBibliophage Great job!! It doesn‘t matter when you read the prompts. I‘ll tag my cohosts who keep our lists for the drawing. @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft 🎉🎉🎉📚📚 7y
LibrarianRyan @BarbaraTheBibliophage I don't need to be in the drawing. But thanks. I couldn't remember who was running this one besides you. 😀 7y
AmyG Same for me. I feel behind, but technically I‘m not. 7y
Cinfhen Awesome job @LibrarianRyan ❤️🎉 7y

I'm taking my life in my hands. I let Josh Drive. Worse drive my car. He has no care or use for my racing suspension or my supercharged v8. So I shall read and not pay attention (I hope).

Trashcanman What the hell kind of care do you have? 👁️👁️ 7y
Trashcanman Be careful 7y
LibrarianRyan I drive a Nissan Julie with racing package. There's a pick on my #roadtripgiceaway announcement. Not the hideous black camery of a rental car. Yuck!! 7y

LibrarianRyan @Trashcanman few years ago I got rid of my made for the farm and Colorado winters SUV for a cross over. (The the back the seats are never up). I wanted a little zip and really enjoyed the one I originally test drive 😜👇🏻 7y
LibrarianRyan Dealer was going to give me a week test drive (library donor) and I went to pick it up and someone else just drove off with it. It didn't have everything I wanted any way and he says they just got a custom order display racing model in they would let me have for the week. And it had all the features I wanted plus some. It was so much better than the other. I was back that night to buy that car. He sold it to for the👇🏻 (edited) 7y
LibrarianRyan Same price as the stripped model being a "pillar of the town". When I was signing papers the other guys wife comes in and starts talking about Jeepin and racing and some of the other stupid crap we used to do in high school. He never put two and two forger until then. It was kid of funny. 7y
Trashcanman Sweetness! You still alive? 7y
LibrarianRyan @Trashcanman yes. And I haven't had a ticket for 3 years. And then 5 years before that. 7y

Okay all what do u think: new word or typo?

Gorped

I can not find it in any online dictionary. I'm going to look in the big book once I get to my office.

KathyWheeler Could be a typo for “gulped”, but that would make more sense if she was drinking, not eating. I go for made up word. 7y
Lindy The Oxford English Dictionary cites a 1913 reference to the verb "gorp", meaning "to eat greedily". 7y
julesG @Lindy Yeah for the OED! 7y

LibrarianRyan @Lindy see I just needed a bigger dictionary. 😁 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Haha! My first thought was typo for grope. She was really into that 🍔! 7y
Bookworm54 Does she mean gawped? Like jaw dropped staring type thing. That‘s the gawp I use... wouldn‘t fit in this context though haha (edited) 7y
Aurys Don‘t you guys always gorp your burgers?? ;) 7y
2BR02B I've heard "gorp" as a noun: it's a type of trail mix containing Granola, Oats, Raisins, and Peanuts (hence the name). Not sure how that relates to burgers, though. 7y
2BR02B Maybe "gorp" is a portmanteau of "gulp" and "slurp"? 7y
LibrarianRyan @Aurys not currently but I will in the future. 😜 7y
KathyWheeler @Lindy My library had the OED online and I didn‘t even think to look! 🤦‍♀️. 7y
The_Literary_Jedi Gorp: to have eaten or drunk very fast ... urban dictionary (dot) com added 2016 7y
Lindy @LibrarianRyan @KathyWheeler I didn‘t do extensive research, only typed “verb gorp meaning” into Google. The quote I pulled is actually from Wiktionary.org and may be a complete fabrication, for all I know. Since then, I‘ve checked my public library‘s OED online and the only definition for gorp is as a noun. 7y
LibrarianRyan @The_Literary_Jedi @Lindy that is so funny. I was sitting outside reading saw it and googled. Never had a word not come up. Went to dictionary.com ran the word and got an error, Webster online said it didn't exist. I have to be on a state computer or know my state library off the top of my head to access OED. 7y
The_Literary_Jedi No idea what it was either but anytime I come up to a rando word, I check urban first because you never know 7y

Not half a page in and already hooked. Did I mention that I hate snakes. I'm not afraid of them, I just really don't like them. If you had grown up in Guam you too might hate snakes.

ReadingRover Did you grow up in Guam? 😧 LoL that‘s definitely something I did not know about you! 7y
LibrarianRyan @ReadingRover for a few years, yes. Military brat. Grew up all over. Started school in Guam. 7y

I can. Or wait to dive into this. I LOVE a Hiaasen MG novel! And apparently his editor agrees. If you have kids pick up any of his books. Currently my favorite is Chomp but we shall see if this tops it.

Carl Hiassen can do no wrong when he puts pen to paper for kids. Another Auto buy. Chomp is my favorite. But maybe this one will beat it.
