A Woman Loved: A Novel | Andre Makine

The fascinating story of a young Russian filmmaker's attempts to portray Catherine the Great, before and after the collapse of the Soviet Union Catherine the Great's life seems to have been made for the cinemaher rise to power; her reportedly countless love affairs and wild sexual escapades; the episodes of betrayal, revenge, and even murderthere's no shortage of historical drama. But Oleg Erdmann, a young Russian filmmaker, seeks to discover and portray Catherine's essential, emotional truth, her real life beyond the rumors and faade. His first screenplay just barely makes it past the Soviet film board and is assigned to a talented director, but the resulting film fails to avoid the usual clichs. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, as he struggles to find a place for himself in the new order, Oleg agrees to work with an old friend on a television series that becomes a quick successas well as increasingly lurid, a far cry from his original vision. He continues to seek the real Catherine elsewhere. With A Woman Loved, Andre Makine delivers a sweeping novel about the uses of art, the absurdity of history, and the overriding power of human love, if only it can be uncovered and allowed to flourish.

I've neglected this challenge after a burst of enthusiastic posting at the beginning of the month but its been a busy few weeks. So in no particular order I've gone thru my back list to reference Catherine The Great, Alan Turing (murmur is nearly slience), a ghost story in the himalayas, and a 60s folk rock group. Hopefully I'll finish June with a burst of posts !!!

Oleg is an aspiring screenwriter who produces a script abt Catherine The Great, mocked by his g/f for the detail, it finds favour inbthe 80s with the soviet film Committee but he is sacked mid prodn. Skip to the 90s and a new raunchy TV series begins in which he consults. As well as the story of Catherine this story goes into post war + post wall Russia.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Sounds intriguing! You pick such unique stuff! Thanks. 👍🏻📚 2y
andrew61 @BarbaraTheBibliophage thank you Barbara, the challenge is a perfect excuse to dip into that pile of books or find something new. 2y

Wow. For the first time yesterday I had my first negative Litsy experience. I try to stay positive in everything I do & yet I am beyond overwhelmed with the massive amount of positive support I have had in the last 12 hours. I woke up this afternoon to this & I almost cried. The negative has been washed away by the wave of positivity. This community is amazing & I will be trying to thank every one of you. A huge digital hug to @Mommamanzi 💙

TaylorMay 451 characters is just not enough to express my sincere gratitude to each and every one of you. Again THANK YOU ALL💙💙💙💙 LOVE, your fellow #Litten 7y
LauraBeth We love you @TaylorMay ❤️ Also - Bitsy told me to tell you she loves you as well 7y

litmuggle Unfollowed tgem and followed you. This should be a bully free zone. 7y
eanderson I've been learning that negative people are just not worth the time or energy spent on being upset. You came out on top! Smiles are much more friendly than scowls. Litsy is a fun place to be and know there are more people that just want to spread love than ugliness. 😀 7y
TaylorMay @litmuggle thank you ? @eanderson I totally agree I have always been a fan of the "rise above" attitude. Never let others pull you down to their level. I love Litsy and this experience has just reinforced that. 7y
Jess7 What happened? I think I'm out of the loop. I agree that Litsy should be a drama free zone :-) 7y
OrangeMooseReads I‘m glad the negative has been wiped away. I did what @litmuggle did as well. Look forward to getting to know you 😁 7y

Since school is only two hours today, I had to take the day off. So now I have this tiny book oasis in my day #somethingforsept

RealLifeReading Sounds like an interesting book 8y
BookishTrish I like to have one slow burning read on the go at a time. So far it's a very different take on the Catherine the Great mythology because it's seen through the filter of the screenwriter's life. 8y

Celebrates Catherine the Great as Oleg makes a film, trying to capture "the freshness of a winter's morning as Catherine one day lived it." Small details are poignant & the overlay of Oleg's life touching. Also shows modern Russia & how history repeats itself (from tsars to oligarchs); wonderful re mixed feelings about end of Soviet Union. Intelligent, sensitive. Oleg's life more engaging than historical details. Good to read w The Romanovs.

This came recommended by Sarah of South Seas Books, Pt Elliot, a gem of a bookstore. I've been saving it up since January, excited to start reading! Already hooked by the mischievous tone with dark undercurrent & character of Catherine the Great. 👌👑
