Girl in the Woods
Girl in the Woods: A Memoir | Aspen Matis
18 posts | 20 read | 14 to read
Girl in the Woods is Aspen Matis's exhilarating true-life adventure of hiking from Mexico to Canadaa coming of age story, a survival story, and a triumphant story of overcoming emotional devastation. On her second night of college, Aspen was raped by a fellow student. Overprotected by her parents who discouraged her from telling of the attack, Aspen was confused and ashamed. Dealing with a problem that has sadly become all too common on college campuses around the country, she stumbled through her first semestera challenging time made even harder by the coldness of her college's "conflict mediation" process. Her desperation growing, she made a bold decision: She would seek healing in the freedom of the wild, on the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail leading from Mexico to Canada. In this inspiring memoir, Aspen chronicles her journey, a five-month trek that was ambitious, dangerous, and transformative. A nineteen-year-old girl alone and lost, she conquered desolate mountain passes and met rattlesnakes, bears, and fellow desert pilgrims. Exhausted after each thirty-mile day, at times on the verge of starvation, Aspen was forced to confront her numbness, coming to terms with the sexual assault and her parents' disappointing reaction. On the trail and on her own, she found that survival is predicated on persistent self-reliance. She found her strength. After a thousand miles of solitude, she found a man who helped her learn to love and trust againand heal. Told with elegance and suspense, Girl in the Woods is a beautifully rendered story of eroding emotional and physical boundaries to reveal the truths that lie beyond the edges of the map.

This book kind of annoyed me not only for the writing but also for the person who read it before me and had to make a million footnotes throughout the book. The book delves into the authors rape and her journey of healing on the Pacific Coast Trail. The writing for me just felt disjointed throughout the book and I never made a connection with what the author was trying to portray. Also she made hiking the PCT sound like a cake walk. Not my fav..

I am definitely having a news related rage blackout tonight. I‘m so mad I can‘t sleep. The serious upside is that I have an unopened bag of bbq chips and an hour to go on this beauty. So I‘m going to quietly storm out to the living room so I don‘t wake up my family and angrily read this book.

I‘m usually a sucker for memoir and nature writing but I couldn‘t even get to the nature parts.... no one should have to live through sexual assault and clearly the author had some odd family things going on but the narrative is like oddly disjointed teen prose absent empathy, reason or sense. Can‘t take it.

thebookishtype15 I got through it all but I completely agree. There were some writing issues where it seemed so off. It was a lot of whining. 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @thebookishtype15 it was a LOT of whining wasn‘t it? It was almost like the entire portion I read was a repeat of Strayed‘s “shoe throwing” moment in Wild but where Strayed had one whingey stupid moment, this was just over and over and over. Not sure how you managed all the way but hats off!! 🎩 😊👍🏻 6y

One quick Litsy skim of its reviews later and I am regretting this eBook, even for .99c. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ It‘s not horrible but it‘s patchy and disordered so far. Not disliking it enough to bail yet, she rarely mentions food (🤢) and the skimming suits my gastro poisoned brain so I‘ll probably keep going for the Muir as much as to see what happens but I‘m resolved to check Litsy before any more random late night ebook sale purchases!

Bklover That‘s too bad! From the description it sounds really good (sort of a different version of Wild) but the reviews are awful! 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @Bklover It‘s not at all accurate especially as to tone. Unless the book manages to make a drastic hard turn and completely change narrative styles and techniques, there is nothing riveting and very little uplifting. It‘s angsty, jumpy, overly descriptive and thus far, really poorly written. I loved Wild even when Strayed drove me crazy but this is nowhere near the same caliber. Definitely #borrownotbuy to see what you think (but Litsy FTW) 6y
Bklover This one probably won‘t make it to my TBR. Wild was enough for me. 😉 6y

GlassAsDiamonds @Bklover i think that‘s probably a sane call... I DNFed it last night which I very rarely do!!! Although if you wanted a funny hiking memoir, Bill Bryson‘s tagged is brilliant (but I am a fan of his writing). 😊😊😊 6y
Bklover I loved A Walk in the Woods!! 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @Bklover me too!!!! 😊😊😊😊😊 6y

I made it 30 pages, folks. The writing is so unnecessarily descriptive it's funny. She jumps from one point in time to another with no warning, so I just ended up rereading passages trying to figure out where I was in the story. I feel for her, but yeah. I give up.

This book was ok. I empathize with this young woman and am glad hiking the trail helped her, but honestly I skimmed a lot of this book. It just didn't hold my attention. Maybe others will like it better. #LitsyAtoZ #myGpick

GlassAsDiamonds Two years on.... I suspect I‘m shortly going to post a near identical review 🤦🏻‍♀️😊🤦🏻‍♀️ 6y

#bestlineinabadbook My least favourite read of 2016 did have some great lines.
"The trees were friendly, they gave me rest and shadowed refuge. Slipping through them, I felt safe and competent. My whole body was occupied. I had little energy to think or worry."
animal learning to fight back, instinctively, fiercely. I was a brave girl. I was a fit fox.
I realized that the most empowering important thing was actually simply taking care of myself."

So far, it's a great read. However, I am finding her prose difficult. She has a tendency to pepper passages with random details and repeats herself quite a bit. Still want to see how it ends.

It was a good read, but it really read more like fiction than fact. The author is not a very sympathetic "character," as she remains spoiled and privileged throughout. There was a lot of embellishments throughout, as well, which are obvious to those that read any of the real time trail journals of the PCT in 2009.

I couldn't bring myself to finish it. Loved the premise, the idea of healing through nature. Didn't love the author. I sympathize with her, and understand some of her issues. But I couldn't get past her whining and ungrateful, spoiled, sheltered girl attitude. I recommend reading Wild instead.
