I started it, but just around 40 pages in and I'm going to have to bail. I was super excited by the premise, but I just... Can't read an entire book right now where every other line is the main character telling me about how angry she is and how she will "get her revenge." It's cool if you're going to have an angry protagonist, but you need to make sure the reader is invested very quickly otherwise it just gets tedious.

I'm a little older than the intended audience of this book, but while I certainly felt a little distance from Reiko's roaring emotions, I remember enough of being a teenager to be sympathetic to her. Plus for magical elements that aren't strictly western, some minuses for some flat portrayals of (modern) places (Seattle and Tokyo).

I'm getting over the huge reading slump I had last month and reading more! This is on my December TBR. It's set in 19th century Japan and deals with REVENGE. Annnddd...that's pretty much all I know about it. Lindsay Smith is one of those authors whose books I'm automatically excited for, even though I've only read on by her.

So many amazing books out this week - I'm feeling slightly overwhelmed 🙌

I am very mature. I also give up on getting this book because seriously fuckit.

It took me over a month to read this novel, and I think I needed that time to really process it. A DARKLY BEATING HEART is a story that will rip you open, leave you raw and wounded, heartscars split open. It isn't an easy story to read, isn't careful with how its emotional threads might burn, but it's cleansing at the same time, and beautifully cathartic.
