The Death of Noah Glass
The Death of Noah Glass | Gail Jones
11 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
The art historian Noah Glass, having just returned from a trip to Sicily, is discovered floating face down in the swimming pool at his Sydney apartment block. His adult children, Martin and Evie, must come to terms with the shock of their fathers death. But a sculpture has gone missing from a museum in Palermo, and Noah is a suspect. The police are investigating. None of it makes any sense. Martin sets off to Palermo in search of answers about his fathers activities, while Evie moves into Noahs apartment, waiting to learn where her life might take her. Retracing their fathers steps in their own way, neither of his children can see the path ahead. Gail Joness mesmerising new novel tells a story about parents and children, and explores the overlapping patterns that life makes. The Death of Noah Glass is about love and art, about grief and happiness, about memory and the mystery of time. The author of seven novels and two collections of stories, Gail Jones is one of Australias most celebrated writers. Her work has been translated into twelve languages, awarded several prizes in Australia. Internationally her fiction has been longlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the Orange Prize and shortlisted for the IMPAC Award and the Prix Femina tranger. She lives in Glebe, NSW. Told masterfully from the perspective of three finely drawn characters, The Death of Noah Glass combines an enjoyable escapade involving art theft, mafia conspiracy, romance and a suspicious death with a literary exploration of grief, identity and the power of the past to damage present lives. Fans of Jones will not be disappointed, and new readers should find much to recommend it. Books+Publishing Jones is one of our greatest writersfor her enormous wisdom and insight as well as the shimmering intensity of her descriptive language. West Australian

This is a case of, “did I read the same book (that a few others on Litsy did not enjoy)?” @Jeg
A slow, ponderous, literary novel set in Italy & Australia about siblings and parents, lovers & art history and how our family of origin shapes us.
No neat bows. Reminded me a little of fellow Australian Georgia Blain and Rhubarb by Craig Silvey. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

CarolynM I‘ve always been a bit scared of Gail Jones. You‘ve inspired me to try this one🙂 2y
MrsMalaprop @CarolynM She is quite literary, but I‘ve enjoyed the three I‘ve read 🤷‍♀️. I‘d love to know your thoughts once you‘ve read one. 2y

When ‘naive‘ Australian Noah meets erudite Italian Dora.

“Australianness, she‘d implied, was a condition of ignorance and innocence, corrupted by good luck.”

“In the coral light of a summer dawn, Martin Glass recalled a tale. Two brothers in their late seventies attended the funeral of their father, aged 42”.

Intriguing, no?

I got this book in Ubud, Bali at the Writer‘s Festival in 2018 after seeing the author speak. Then I saw some not-so-positive reviews & pushed it down my #tbr list. A couple of weekends ago I heard someone on the radio (I don‘t even know who it was!) say Gail Jones is an undervalued Australian writer. So, I‘m determined to read it. I have read & enjoyed a couple of her other books, Sixty Lights & Dreams of Speaking. #ozfiction #currentlyreading

Rissreads I have not read anything by this author. Another name on the list! 2y

Mehso-so

This has been on my TBR list for a while. Beautifully written without a doubt. The 3 main characters had different chapters and settings. Had to concentrate.

MrsMalaprop Oh wow. Funny we should both be reading it around the same time. 2y

Bailedbailed

I suspect there is an intriguing story somewhere in this book but it was just too slow and ponderous for me. It‘s a pity because I did genuinely want to know what the deal was with Noah... just not enough to slog through.

AntoinetteBuchanan I bailed as well. For the same reasons 6y
MrsMalaprop Oh no! I bought it after seeing her speak in Ubud. It‘s waiting patiently on my #TBR. @AntoinetteBuchanan 6y
AntoinetteBuchanan It‘s interesting, you may just fly through it. I enjoyed the beginning it it slowed a lot in the middle and I lost impetus 6y

Today is a momentous day... I just submitted my final assignment for a Master if Information Management course. This concludes half a decade of juggling parenting young children, working and studying. So my plan now is devote a fair chunk of my previous study time to reading for pleasure. What joy!! Here‘s a few I need to get read ASAP starting with the tagged book.

Can‘t sleep so I‘m moving onto the next book. I want it to put me to sleep but I also don‘t want it to put me to sleep if you know what I mean.

Picking this up after a break due to being insanely occupied with work.

gradcat This sounds very good—looking forward to your review! 6y
MrsMalaprop Have on my bedside #TBR stack. Saw Jones speak about it last year. Be interested in your review. 6y
AntoinetteBuchanan The writing is sublime @gradcat and @MrsMalaprop . I‘m not as engaged as I might be but suspect that is lack of reading time rather than the story itself 6y

Book 9 of the #2019stellaprize longlist. Deliberately early to collect my husband from the bus so I can make a start on this

MrsMalaprop Ooh, have this on my bedside #TBR. Saw Jones speak about it at the Ubud Writers Festival last year. Am a little worried it might be hard work? 6y
AntoinetteBuchanan I‘m only a little way through and it‘s an easy enough read. The language is delightful @MrsMalaprop 6y
