My American Dream
My American Dream: A Life of Love, Family, and Food | Lidia Matticchio Bastianich
3 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
From the best-selling cookbook author, beloved and award-winning television personality, and hugely successful restaurateur--a heartwarming, emotional, revelatory memoir told with all her hallmark warmth and gusto. Lidia's story begins with her upbringing in Pula, a formerly Italian city turned Yugoslavian under Tito's communist regime. She enjoys a childhood surrounded by love and security--despite the family's poverty--learning everything about Italian cooking from her beloved grandmother, Nonna Rosa. When the communist regime begins investigating the family, they flee to Trieste, Italy, where they spend two years in a refugee camp waiting for visas to enter the United States--an experience that will shape Lidia for the rest of her life. At age 12, Lidia starts a new life in New York. She soon begins working in restaurants as a young teenager, the first step toward the creation of her own American dream. And she tells in great, vivid detail the fulfillment of that dream: her close-knit family, her dedication and endless passion for food that ultimately leads to multiple restaurants, many cookbooks, and twenty years on public television as the host of her own cooking show. An absolute must-have for the millions of Lidia fans.

It‘s been so long since I stepped foot in my library. Or at least it feels like it. I think it‘s been 7 weeks. A few weeks before I went on vacation, I decided I should be #readingmyshelves and canceled all my holds. Unthinkable! But I‘ve been getting such great recommendations from you Litsy pals, Podcasts and books about books. Decided I needed to get to these ASAP. Or at least attempt it.

catebutler These look great! It‘s been such a long time since I‘ve been to my library too. I think reading from my own shelves has been a bit of a priority, but this post has made me think I need a visit back to the library ASAP! Love the position of the mirror in this picture. 😍 6y
EvieBee @catebutler Thank you so much! ♥️ I find that when I do set limits or bans on buying and only reading my books, I spend way more on books. I really just wish I could enjoy my personal library to the fullest but as long as there are new books I‘ll always want to read other things. Sigh. 6y

Food, family + culture. This is a memoir on Lidia‘s childhood in communist Yugoslavia, refugee years, US immigration, chef life - to current year‘s endeavors.

Sad to read Lidia‘s refugee years spent in Trieste Italy (her family + thousands) was placement in a holocaust camp used 13 yrs earlier during WWll.

Love of family shines brightly throughout + grandchildren now listen to her heartfelt stories about their heritage. A beautiful memoir! 5 ☆

EvieBee Thank you recommending this book! I just checked it out from the library. 6y
tammysue @EvieBee I don‘t read a lot of of this genre but I really enjoyed this book. Her life is so interesting, I hope you like it! 6y

I‘m such a huge fan of Lidia‘s. Did you know she has a new book out? She was on Home & Family promoting her new autobiography (and I had to buy it of course🤩). It explores Lidia‘s family and her childhood experience in communist Yugoslavia, refugee years in Italy, and her immigration to the US. Is very interesting.
