From one of the most powerful writers in modern fiction comes a dystopian vision of a world where money reigns supreme, and nothing is so precious that it can't be bought.... The penalty for Dani Cumali's murder: 84,000. Theo works in the Criminal Audit Office. He assesses each crime that crosses his desk and makes sure the correct debt to society is paid in full. These days, there's no need to go to prison - provided that you can afford to pay the penalty for the crime you've committed. If you're rich enough, you can get away with murder. But Dani's murder is different. When Theo finds her lifeless body, and a hired killer standing over her and calmly calling the police to confess, he can't let her death become just an entry on a balance sheet. Someone is responsible. And Theo is going to find them and make them pay. Perfect for fans of speculative fiction such as The Handmaid's Tale and Never Let Me Go, Claire North's moving and unnerving new novel will resonate with readers around the world. Whoa disturbing! This is the offspring of dystopia ancestor 1984 (nod in the title), with Handsmaid Tale, A Clockwork Orange, Mad Max, Children of Men and a consumer world gone berserk, filling in the rest of this story‘s genealogy. Not for everyone- it jumps around a lot and the “poetic” aspect with nary a complete sentence, can jangle the nerves. North creates a mood with that style however which made this an enjoyable if chilling read for me.

I had to DNF this one under 100 pages. Great concept but I cannot get on with the writing style - repetitions, sentences left unfinished. Sorry, can't do it.

Theo finally reacted to the fundamental immortality of his entirely corporate-driven world. Yet, he only did so when things became personal. This is my 2nd Claire North Sci-Fi novel. She‘s 2-for-2 in my book 😊

So this was an odd one and I'm still not sure how I feel about it. I was quickly absorbed in the story and really wanted to know what happened but I struggled with the stream-of-consciousness writing style which kept slipping between timelines with no warning. Overall, then, a so-so three stars.

This is dystopia at it's best. So believable it's utterly depressing at times. It's also deeply British and made me homesick despite the horror of it all.

Halfway through, more nuanced than I expected. Occasionally a bit pretentious, but, ultimately, telling a great story.

In an all too possible dystopian future a man— Theo— tries to disrupt a system where all human life is only a number. This was pretty good but not great. The book switches timelines constantly but eventually they do meet up.

There‘s lots done well here, but it both worked too well (channelling my current anxieties about the world) and didn‘t work at all (didn‘t make me care) so this turned into a slog- especially as the literary timeslip / elliptical / vaguebooking soon got on my nerves. The message is timely tho.

Quick lunch break for amazing buffalo chicken tacos. I'm obsessed with these. And there just happens to be a barnes and noble behind that tree. Maybe just a quick browse...

I picked up this giant squid on a whim while ordering some books and I guess it's my reading buddy now.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I listened to and enjoyed North‘s The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August awhile back. Also a big Craft Sequence fan! 6y

Theo is the main character in this dystopian novel by Claire North. He works in the Criminal Audit Office and he assesses crimes and makes sure the debt to society is paid.

This is a world where you can get away with crime if you can pay for it and it‘s chilling.

Terrifying read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was really looking forward to this but just couldn't get into it. I tried quite a few times over the past 3 weeks but now it's due back at the library and I'm not too fussed about returning it unread. I might add it to my hold list again in a couple of months.

Went in to this not knowing anything about it, and without reading the blurb. Have enjoyed all her novels so far and so just dived in. Nice slow burn story, terrifying depiction of a near-future dystopia (and one not hard to imagine at all!). Great plot, Great ending, overall thoroughly enjoyed this one.

Copwithabook I love her writing too. I think she has a more masculine style than a lot of female writers. When she writes a male character, I find him believable as male and will forget the author is female. What do think? 6y
Mandigolightly The First 15 Lives of Harry August is one of my very favorites. She‘s a great writer 6y
wtimblin @Copwithabook I often forget the sex of the author immediately once I start reading, but I get what you are saying. She is a great author, I just realised I haven't read The End of the Day, so on the TBR pile it goes! 6y
Copwithabook I liked the End of the Day 6y

If she writes it, I‘ll read it! I love Claire North‘s writing, and this dystopian view of England in the near future is so possible that it‘s scary. Big business runs everything: the country, life and death. Highly recommended!

I needed something completely different after binge reading the Sevenwaters series. This is good so far. Weird, but good.

JillR Ooooh stacking, this sounds good. I enjoyed Touch but haven‘t read anything else by Claire North yet... 7y
