Murder on Millionaires' Row
Murder on Millionaires' Row | Erin Lindsey
Erin Lindsey takes readers on a chase through Gilded Age Manhattan, filled with wonderful historical details, ghosts, romance, and Pinkerton detectives in this delightfully charming debut mystery. Rose Gallagher might dream of bigger things, but shes content enough with her life as a housemaid. After all, its not every girl from Five Points who gets to spend her days in a posh Fifth Avenue brownstone, even if only to sweep its floors. But all that changes on the day her boss, Mr. Thomas Wiltshire, disappears. Rose is certain Mr. Wiltshire is in trouble, but the police treat his disappearance as nothing more than the whims of a rich young man behaving badly. Meanwhile, the friend who reported him missing is suspiciously unhelpful. With nowhere left to turn, Rose takes it upon herself to find her handsome young employer. The investigation takes her from the marble palaces of Fifth Avenue to the sordid streets of Five Points. When a ghostly apparition accosts her on the street, Rose begins to realize that the world around her isnt at all as it seemsand her place in it is about to change forever.

If you like some paranormal fantasy mixed in with your mystery, if you‘d appreciate a plucky, smart servant who has a crush on her handsome single employer investigating all sorts of nefarious things, this is the mystery for you. This was an odd book. It started out as a straight forward mystery book involving a housemaid (Rose) whose wealthy employer goes missing. She sets out to find out what happened to him. THEN it takes a huge paranormal turn, out of the blue. There are ghosts, a secret society of people with various special abilities, Pinkertons and an opened portal from the spirit world. I like paranormals, but this was a bit jarring in its abrupt turn. 🔻

robinb Just OK for me. 3.5/5⭐️ (edited) 4y
TheAromaofBooks I'm not sure if you've ever seen the kids' movie Bolt, but there's this scene where someone is pitching an idea for the next episode of a tv show and he's just like, “And then... ALIENS!“ And that's what I hear in my head every time an author just suddenly leaps onto the paranormal bandwagon out of nowhere 😂 4y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks I have not seen that movie, but yeah...I had whiplash there for a minute! 🤪 It‘s weird thinking you‘re reading a mystery and halfway through you‘re like...OK, I‘ve entered the Twilight Zone!! 😂😂🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y

Considering I already read 123 different series, I didn't really need to start a new one but the third book in this series is set in Medora, ND so begin this series I did. Many historical cozies have a somewhat similar feel to them but this has an interesting twist with a Special Branch of the Pinkertons who focus specifically on the supernatural. Rose is a fresh new heroine & Thomas is surprisingly progressive for the time.

I really enjoyed this beginning to a new historical mystery series! I‘m looking forward to seeing what kind of trouble Rose is going to get herself into next. It was a fun read that I just immersed myself in! Recommended!

Sitting in the car reading while my boys both practice football. It‘s too cold to sit outside and watch today so quality reading time to commence!

Annl I am so jealous of people who are experiencing cold weather. It is still in the 90‘s in Florida. 6y
Samantha.1020 @Annl We are getting a lot of rain actually which is helping with the cooler temps. 6y

Out in October, this is the fun start to a series! Rose longs for adventure, and she gets her chance for some when her boss goes missing. Investigating his disappearance opens her eyes to a world she didn't believe in, the world of the paranormal. Lindsey balances the historical and paranormal elements wonderfully, and introduces a solid supporting cast that I hope we get to know better in upcoming installments.
