The Broken Shore
The Broken Shore | Peter Temple
10 posts | 13 read | 15 to read
Winner of the Ned Kelly Award for Crime Fiction (Australia) Joe Cashin was different once. He moved easily then. He was surer and less thoughtful. But there are consequences when youve come so close to dying. For Cashin, they included a posting away from the world of Homicide to the quiet place on the coast where he grew up. Now all he has to do is play the country cop and walk the dogs. And sometimes think about how he was before. Then prominent local Charles Bourgoyne is beaten and left for dead. Everything seems to point to three boys from the nearby Aboriginal community; everyone seems to want it to. But Cashin is unconvinced. And as tragedy unfolds relentlessly into tragedy, he finds himself holding onto something that might be better let go. From the Hardcover edition.

This was a new author to me but what a great piece of gritty crime writing. Joe Cashin is a police officer who, following injury in duty, is seconded to a small Australian town near his home town. He gets drawn into investigation of death of a local businessman. This highlights racial tensions in Australia. The language + character rings true ,a powerful crime novel, can't wait to read more.

Short and witty dialogue. Very enjoyable detective story. I don't usually get along with detective or police or crime books, but this was an exception. ⭐⭐⭐1/2

This is a crime thriller with a very Australian flavour. I loved it but it may not be everyone‘s cup of tea! Written in 2007 it feels relevant to now. Without giving anything away it touches on racism, corruption, abuse but doesn‘t feel heavy. Beautifully written with no words waisted. Can‘t wait to read the next book Truth. Sadly Peter Temple died in March.

A crime novel, well-plotted but not fast paced. This came highly recommended as a great read, intelligently written with an Australian setting (Great Ocean Road). It stands up: dialogue is spot-on, the writing taut & police life captured w relentless honesty. Characters are pared back but sympathetic & complex. A masculine tone (but the sexism & racism is describing, not author‘s own view), slow & the locations confused me at times. Of its time.

Redheadrambles Oh I looove this book 7y
Abailliekaras @Redheadrambles I was impatient for much of it and appreciated how good it was rather than loving it, but liked it more by the end. It‘s very blokey, which I‘m just a bit tired of (although I think Peter Temple is more enlightened & pokes gentle fun at them). 7y
Redheadrambles @Abailliekaras ah yes it IS Blokey that‘s true. I have a soft spot for minimal speaking Aussie male detectives;) It‘s good Aussie noir but certainly I get where your coming from. 7y
Abailliekaras @redheadreads it definitely covers the minimal speaking Aussie male detective niche! 😂 I didn‘t mind it because it rang so true, but I found much of it depressing at the same time. 7y
MrsMalaprop Great review 👍. And discussion @Redheadrambles. I liked the book, along with Truth. But I can‘t handle too much of that blokey writing 😂. 7y

Kids dinner + reading time on the verandah. I‘ve just started this and am enjoying it so far, although feeling anxious about all the books from my TBR that I want to read (Home Fire, Delirium, Homegoing...). #riotgrams #blackbooks

This isn't something I'd normally read, but as a good bookclub member I doubled down and gave it a go. I am so glad I did. It was a smart well paced old style cop story. The broken cop, licking his wounds and wanting some peace and quiet... but not to be had. With was a 3.5 star read, but because there is no half star emoji, it gets 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Redheadrambles Yeah I really liked this one too 7y

I'm digging this more than I thought I would. My only gripe is the odd dialogue. The author often drops a word off the front of a sentence to give it an Australian laconic feel - another pic of the local coast.

MrsMalaprop I enjoyed The Broken Shore and Truth, but I did find the writing a bit, dare I say it, 'blokey'? What do I mean by that? A bit plain and devoid of feeling, but I imagine that is what Temple intended. Thoughts anyone? 7y
