For the Cavendish family, Rutherford Park is much more than a place to call home. It is a way of life marked by rigid rules and lavish rewards, governed by unspoken desires . . .

#LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead Question 5

Critics and reviewers have compared this novel to Downton Abbey, in the descriptions of interactions between the “upstairs” and “downstairs.” How would you respond to this comparison?

catebutler It does have that feel, although it focused a bit more on the upstairs than the downstairs as the story progressed. From a marketing perspective, I do think I would use the Downton Abbey comparison myself. It‘s the hook! (edited) 4y

#LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead Question 4 (from the readers guide at the end of the pb edition)

Why do you think Octavia stays at Rutherford at the end of the novel?

#LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead Question 3 (from the readers guide at the end of the pb edition)

Helene is the catalyst for Octavia and William‘s marital troubles, yet she is also the epitome of a free and modern woman. Is Helene the villain of the novel, because of the Cavendish‘s downfall, or is her affair with William a blessing in disguise for Octavia?

catebutler I think a little of both, and maybe she was used as an example, to show how times were changing, and women would eventually be able to stand on their own two feet. Sadly, the villains in this book were the Cavendish men...seems to ring true in most stories like this! 😆 4y

#LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead Question 2

At one point in the novel, John Gould discovers amongst William‘s writing a quote that reads, “Honesty is no match for villainy.” To what extent does the novel support this theory?

catebutler I think the whole outcome at the end shows this. All those years of thinking he was the father, or not knowing the truth, and the lives that were ruined or affected by lies, deception and villainy. 4y

The end of the month means some discussion time for the August #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead . Please feel free to answer the questions when you can! I will post the next few questions as a spoiler.

1. What was your overall impression of this novel? This is actually the first in a series set at Rutherford Park - will you continue to read the series?

catebutler I enjoyed it so I‘d give it a solid 3 stars. And I‘ll eventually get to the rest of the series. Not quite enchanted enough to drop everything and read them though! 😂 4y

A little late for check in, but we‘re nearing the end of the reading for this one! Thoughts? Impressions?

I‘m behind with my reading for this section - darn work and crazy hours!

I also need to post some options for next month - would love to hear any suggestions you may have!

Jerdencon I actually finished it last week - it was ok. A little over the top and far fetched for me but once I got to a certain point just had to finish it, 4y
Librarybelle @Jerdencon I was hoping it would be a bit better. At the end of Chapter 4, I am intrigued and so am looking forward to getting into the next section. 4y
catebutler I‘m almost finished with the book, once I got through chapters 5 and 6, I decided to just keep reading. I‘m enjoying it, but like a few have mentioned it is a little over the top. Overall though, it‘s been a fun read with dramatic intrigues! I‘d give it a solid 3 at the moment. 4y
Librarybelle @catebutler Great! Dramatic intrigues is a good description! 4y

Check in time for the #LiteraryCrew . How is the reading going for you? My comments are below, as a spoiler.

Librarybelle Right now, this is a so-so read for me. I like reading the stories between the “upstairs” and “downstairs,” but I feel like the narrative is missing something. I‘m not sure what it is missing exactly, but it‘s not as captivating as I had hoped. Currently, I‘m still in Chapter 3. 4y
Jerdencon I‘m in chapter 3 too - it‘s not bad but not liking any of the characters yet! 4y
Chrissyreadit I can‘t get past chapter 1. 4y

catebutler I'm in chapter 3 too. And I'm of a similar mind, but all the drama at the end of chapter 2 definitely piqued my interest. Chapter 1 was a bit of a snooze. Hopefully it will get better? 4y
Librarybelle @Jerdencon @Chrissyreadit @catebutler I actually just finished Chapter 4 (a cat jumped on my lap, so that gave me some reading time)...there are some revelations by the end of Chapter 3 that piqued my interest. I‘m curious how things will play out. 4y
Jerdencon @Librarybelle @chrissyreadit @catebutler just finished chapter 3 and it definitely picks up! 4y

Librarybelle Thanks for your insights and responses, @BethM @catebutler @Chrissyreadit ! I was able to get a few pages in last night...too soon to make a complete impression. Funnily, I was reminded how much I like the name Octavia. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
Jerdencon I‘m a little behind but hope to start this week! 4y

For those who have enjoyed reading along with the #LiteraryCrew , I am so sorry for the delay in posting! Getting used to long hours at the library has left my non-work brain forgetful, I guess. Huge thank you to @BethM for reminding me!

We‘ll read Rutherford Park by Elizabeth Cooke, which is the first in a series set in Rutherford Park. Set in 1913...English country house, with the front blurb saying it‘s as addicting as Downton Abbey. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle We‘re a low key reading group that posts about the book throughout the month, using the #literarycrew hashtag, and I have a schedule outlined as just a suggested guide. Read as quickly as you wish - I think I need a schedule at the moment to make sure I‘m reading! Open to anyone interested - just let me know, and I‘ll tag you in forthcoming posts! 4y

Pickpick

This is your typical historical fiction novel about family drama caused by secrets. I happen to like books like this so naturally I liked this. It wasn‘t the best one I ever read, but it was still good and entertaining for the most part. It took a while for the story to actually get going. What I really liked was how it took place just before World War I broke out. It captured a really interesting time in England and France.
