Critics and reviewers have compared this novel to Downton Abbey, in the descriptions of interactions between the “upstairs” and “downstairs.” How would you respond to this comparison?

catebutler It does have that feel, although it focused a bit more on the upstairs than the downstairs as the story progressed. From a marketing perspective, I do think I would use the Downton Abbey comparison myself. It‘s the hook! (edited) 4y

Helene is the catalyst for Octavia and William‘s marital troubles, yet she is also the epitome of a free and modern woman. Is Helene the villain of the novel, because of the Cavendish‘s downfall, or is her affair with William a blessing in disguise for Octavia?

catebutler I think a little of both, and maybe she was used as an example, to show how times were changing, and women would eventually be able to stand on their own two feet. Sadly, the villains in this book were the Cavendish men...seems to ring true in most stories like this! 😆 4y

At one point in the novel, John Gould discovers amongst William‘s writing a quote that reads, “Honesty is no match for villainy.” To what extent does the novel support this theory?

catebutler I think the whole outcome at the end shows this. All those years of thinking he was the father, or not knowing the truth, and the lives that were ruined or affected by lies, deception and villainy. 4y

1. What was your overall impression of this novel? This is actually the first in a series set at Rutherford Park - will you continue to read the series?

catebutler I enjoyed it so I‘d give it a solid 3 stars. And I‘ll eventually get to the rest of the series. Not quite enchanted enough to drop everything and read them though! 😂 4y

Jerdencon I actually finished it last week - it was ok. A little over the top and far fetched for me but once I got to a certain point just had to finish it, 4y

Librarybelle @Jerdencon I was hoping it would be a bit better. At the end of Chapter 4, I am intrigued and so am looking forward to getting into the next section. 4y

catebutler I‘m almost finished with the book, once I got through chapters 5 and 6, I decided to just keep reading. I‘m enjoying it, but like a few have mentioned it is a little over the top. Overall though, it‘s been a fun read with dramatic intrigues! I‘d give it a solid 3 at the moment. 4y

Librarybelle Right now, this is a so-so read for me. I like reading the stories between the “upstairs” and “downstairs,” but I feel like the narrative is missing something. I‘m not sure what it is missing exactly, but it‘s not as captivating as I had hoped. Currently, I‘m still in Chapter 3. 4y

catebutler I'm in chapter 3 too. And I'm of a similar mind, but all the drama at the end of chapter 2 definitely piqued my interest. Chapter 1 was a bit of a snooze. Hopefully it will get better? 4y

We‘ll read Rutherford Park by Elizabeth Cooke, which is the first in a series set in Rutherford Park. Set in 1913...English country house, with the front blurb saying it‘s as addicting as Downton Abbey. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

This is your typical historical fiction novel about family drama caused by secrets. I happen to like books like this so naturally I liked this. It wasn‘t the best one I ever read, but it was still good and entertaining for the most part. It took a while for the story to actually get going. What I really liked was how it took place just before World War I broke out. It captured a really interesting time in England and France.
