Under the Black Flag
Under the Black Flag: The Romance and the Reality of Life Among the Pirates | David Cordingly
25 posts | 20 read | 31 to read
For this rousing, revisionist history, the former head of exhibitions at England's National Maritime Museum has combed original documents and records to produce a most authoritative and definitive account of piracy's "Golden Age." As he explodes many accepted myths (i.e. "walking the plank" is pure fiction), Cordingly replaces them with a truth that is more complex and often bloodier. 16 pp. of photos. Maps. From the Hardcover edition.

A good historical account of pirates. Crammed with details, little-known facts, and biographical accounts of the more famous buccaneers, it's a good research book for those interested.

Did you know that Pirates would fly a black flag to demand surrender and if this was not forthcoming they would switch to a Red Flag meaning no quarter? If not this book is for you, provide a history of the Pirates who operated within the Caribbean and Atlantic, providing insights into their lives and action, whilst also seeking to quash many of the myths associated with them and the times they lived in.

Oblomov26 And yes the Image is of a Jolly Roger, but they came in all shapes and designs 4y

This book explores how people have romanticized pirates and the realities they faced. It was interesting learning about the roles women play, the influence policy and trade had on pirates and the pirates in history that influences the most famous pirates in our literature and cinema. I really enjoyed the timeline this book took and the variety of things I learned from it.

There are a bunch of mythos out there about pirates, while some are based on truth, others are not. It‘s important to know where the two worlds collide, especially for understanding what my reading might expect in a pirate novel; pirate novel work in progress.

#tallshipcelebration #pirates Not my copy but it looks great ! I have a book buying ban but not a trading ban ! Got rid of 12 , came back with 2 and credit for future choices .Yay!

CrowCAH Wow I‘m surprised you didn‘t do a one for one exchange ☺️ Good restraint and now you‘ll have money for later use! 5y
Bookwomble I have this one, though under a slightly different title, I think. It's a good book 🙂 5y

Honestly, I didn't expect to enjoy this book so much. It's a well-documented and researched book that sheds a realistic light on the pirates' lives, what it truly meant to be a pirate and the harsh environment of the sea life in the 17th & 18th centuries. It deconstructs the myths & legends about famous piratical figures and talks about their fate. Its details and useful explanations manage to capture the reader's attention to the very end.📚

I‘m really trying to buy fewer books lately, but these were both on my TBR list and they‘re ebooks, so they don‘t take up any room. 😆
(This is how I rationalize things to myself)

1. The tagged book has to do with pirates and I‘m hoping to read it this summer at the beach!
2. Octopi or jellyfish
3. I live in a Lake Huron beach town in Michigan so we have a lot of nice beaches! My favorite is called Lighthouse just because it‘s the closest to me so my family usually spends a day a week there in the summer.

This book has been fascinating to read. It breaks down the lives, hardships, and realities of pirates while keeping in focus the popular myths and misconceptions. Cordingly explains how today's picture of pirates came about in juxtaposition with their actual lives in a clear and understandable way. His book is clearly well research with notes and a bibliography included. A must read for anyone wanting to expand their horizons.

Digging into this beauty next! I have just finished Persuasion (I know I didnt post about it but it was just too good to put down!) and decided to stick with the sailor theme Ive got going on right now. I lived in NC during the state history year and we talked about pirates. Ever since then theyve been even more mythical and fascinating.

Original PotC shirt from the ride, 15 years ago. The trip when I first heard about the movie. The logo is loosely based on the #jollyroger of Jack Rackham, which is one of my favorites. #PiratesLife #WhatAWayToLive

CrowCAH Neat; I never knew the POTC logo was off of Calico Jack's flag!!! 7y

Forgot to post this yesterday. A good friend is leaving our office for a new job, so we had a lunch for him yesterday. We have a running joke about pirates, so I got him this book. And maybe he'll let me borrow it when he's finished 👀 #thebestkindofbookishgift

LeahBergen It's a good pirate book! 👍🏼 7y
rabbitprincess @LeahBergen I started reading it from the library, but it coincided with about a dozen other more urgent books, so I never got to finish it. But it does look very good. 7y

LeahBergen This book is such a good overview of pirate history. 👍🏼 7y
CrowCAH @LeahBergen Cool, thanks; I can't wait to actually read it! It sounds like it should help with my creative romance fiction story I'm writing! 7y

This is the book about pirates. If I were to teach a course on pirates, this would be the main text book. Cordingly looks at the history and reality of pirates, but he also looks at pirates in fiction and the romance of pirates.
