Girl Online meets Wild in this emotionally charged story of girl who takes to the wilderness to rediscover herself and escape the superficial persona she created on social media. Mari Turner's life is perfect. That is, at least, to her thousands of followers who have helped her become an internet starlet. But when she breaks down and posts a video confessing she's been living a lie--that she isn't the happy, in love, inspirational online personality she's been trying so hard to portray--it goes viral and she receives a major backlash. To get away from it all, she makes an impulsive decision: to hike the entire John Muir Trail. Mari and her late cousin Bri were supposed to do it together, to celebrate their shared eighteenth birthday. But that was before Mari got so wrapped up in her online world that she shut anyone out who questioned its worth--like Bri. With Bri's boots and trail diary, a heart full of regret, and a group of strangers that she meets along the way, Mari tries to navigate the difficult terrain of the hike. But the true challenge lies within, as she searches for the way back from to the girl she fears may be too lost to find: herself.

This started off well but it soon turned a bit blah for me. For a start, Mari is still being rather selfish. She has no walking experience at all but just takes off whilst her mother is visiting her sister - no thought of the worry she causes by just taking off. Also there's the obligatory romance. It was well written but I just didn't connect with it or the main character, but then I am slightly older than the target audience. 2⭐

Lifestyle influencer Mari spends her days perfecting her image. Perfect boyfriend, perfect diet, perfect life. But the filters hide an empty girl grieving the loss of her cousin & friend, Bri. After celebrating their joint 18th birthday alone Mari snaps & speaks her truth in the most public way possible -on YouTube. Amidst the backlash she receives a gift that sends her into nature to find herself, where she realizes just how lost she really was.

Buechersuechtling Oh I‘d love to read this book but my library doesn‘t have it in stock. 😟 (A fact that happens to me with quite some books spot in your feed …) 5y
xxjenadanxx @Buechersuechtling aww I‘m sorry to hear that! My library doesn‘t have this one either :/ 5y

Mari is an Instagram influencer who, well, loses it. She leaves an emotional mascara streaking sobbing video about how fake her life is and takes to the wilderness to rediscover herself and escape the superficial persona she created on social media.

Picked this up to meet the #booked2019 22. Social media focus YA fans will likely appreciate this more than me.

I had some gift cards left from my birthday, so I went and got a bunch of books from my TBR list. Not pictured: Royals, which I already finished. About to start on The Other Side of Lost!

I have a love-hate relationship with social media. For me to drives people to read my reviews. I struggle with being too wrapped up in getting a good book picture for Bookstagram and at the same time not caring at all. So I identified with Mari at the beginning of the story. As a teenager, she has gotten in way over her head leading an "internet" life. She makes some changes after she unplugs. One of the best YA titles this Summer.
