I picked up this Gem at a Thrift sale. I am so glad I did! I am only a quarter of the way through but what an interesting and terrifying read! I can‘t even imagine when they went through!

I loved this and really hope Iftin will publish another memoir in the future.
“Home felt good even with the roof, doors, and windows gone.”
“These birds are our guests...How come we can‘t save them?” Such a sweet thought ❤️ This is also the calm before the storm.
How his parents met 🥰 “He approached her, bragged about his wealth, the animals, which is the only pickup line in the nomadic culture.” 😂
My #Jolabokaflodswap gift is so amazing! The packaging was gorgeous! Thank you so much, @inthegreensandblues ! I can‘t wait to snuggle down with my yummy chocolate and this wonderful memoir. Merry Christmas! XOXO ❤️💚🎄📚

“No one gets to choose when or where to be born, but what happens after that is what you can imagine.”
An absorbing #memoir. What is it like to be a six year old and witness more violent death and threats on your life (and the lives of your family) than many war veterans can imagine? Abdi “American,” as he was known in Somalia for his love of all things American, describes his long journey from war in Somalia to peace in Maine, USA. He dreams of citizenship, and of bringing peace to his home country. What courage! #immigration #immigrant #refugees
Huh, they have #Vimto in Somalia! Interesting 🤔 I thought this was only a #UAE thing. Like this: https://youtu.be/2nJ0CwAwddw. I can tell I‘m going to love this one already.
This book is truly inspiring. A boy grows up in war torn Somalia, managing to survive violence and famine. He falls in love with America and teaches himself English after watching American movies. Despite all odds, he manages to make it to America and finds work as a translator in Maine. His story is a reminder in these especially turbulent political times that the human spirit in all of us wants a life that is free.Photo from The Literate Quilter
So this sounds pretty good. Iftin now lives in Portland, Maine.
